When I wake up, I’m half convinced it was all a dream. How many people can say they’ve seen Colton, Demon Prince of Controlled Emotion, break down in their bedroom at night? I must have made it up.

But then I see the tie on the floor, right where he left it.

“Holy shit, he was really here,” I say out loud, staring at the pool of gray silk.

“Who was here?”

The bed dips as someone sits down on it behind me, and I startle so hard I almost fall off the side. Spinning around and clutching the bedspread to my chest like some kind of fifties damsel, I expect to find Colton.

But it’s Marek.

Three seconds of assessment tell me he might be on my bed but he hasn’t been in my bed… and my stomach sinks in disappointment.

Marek raises his eyebrows, and for a moment there’s a hint of that same fire from when I first met them—when he was warning me I’d run screaming by the time he was through with me. Now that I know him a little more though, I see something else—it’s not personal. He was doing what he had to when he thought I was the enemy, and now… he’s doing something different.

Marek reclines on my bed, wrist draped over one knee, and studies me with a blazing fire that I’ve only just understood is dormant.

What would it be like to see it lit?

“Colton,” I answer, realizing he’s still waiting.

Marek’s jaw clenches. “He was with you last night?”

“Sure, for about half a second.” I snort. “Until he took his drunk ass off down the corridor. He probably won’t even remember being here.”

The air—increasingly charged with electricity the longer we stare at each other—softens, and Marek’s expression grows unreadable. There’s a curiosity there, almost a sense of wonder as he stares at the doorway where Colton once stood. Like an idea has popped into his brain and he doesn’t know whether to attack it or build it a throne.

“Why are you here?” I interrupt, unwilling to admit what that expression is doing to my insides. “I’m assuming you’re not drunk, too. It’s nine in the morning.”

Marek grins at me, the first true smile I’ve seen from him, and I find myself smiling back.

“I brought you breakfast,” he says, leaning forward conspiratorially before turning to lift the tray from the bedside table one handed.

I gasp audibly when I see what he’s arranged on it. “Where did you get all of this?”

Marek scoffs, eyes bright as he studies my face. “There’s an artisan bakery on the corner, and they deliver.”

Raising one eyebrow, I look up at him, bemused. “We’ve been here a handful of weeks, and half that time you’ve been causing trouble. How do you already know this?”

For a moment, he almost looks offended, but I watch as he visibly shakes it away and shrugs. “Priorities.”

There’s a hard edge to his voice as he says the word, and I hurry to make it up to him the only way I can think to.
