JARGAS nodded. “I am kin to you. I have that Power. I am bonded to Hunter by it, and to one other.”

“How can you be? You are not kin to us. You cannot be. I know every surviving member of every House,” Talon challenged.

“I wear the armband of House of Gryphon,” Jargas said and removed the buckler that blocked it from sight about his wrist. He did not lie. He did not say he was Lord of that House, only that he wore the band. He knew that Talon would make the wrong assumption, as he must, for now. Jargas could not yet reveal himself. He must talk to Farad again before he did so.

Talon’s eyes widened. “Then we have lost only one House, where I thought we had lost two, and we have regained a House long thought lost. Welcome Jargas, Lord of House of Gryphon. I would talk more to you, but later, for now Aras needs me. But first, I must be sure. You said Hunter is well? Despite what I felt, what I feared, he yet lives?”

“Aye. We parted only a week ago. We did not have an easy journey from Malar, and it took much longer than he had hoped. He was anxious to be on his way. I gave him the last of my coin, to speed him on his journey, and told him I would come here and find work to get me back home. He headed north. There is still much I would like to tell you, about what happened in Malar, and there is much I need to learn.”

“On the morrow, Jargas,” Talon said, his tone one of command, brooking no argument.

Jargas reluctantly agreed. “We will speak later.” He left the two of them, wondering at all that had happened, all he had seen and heard. Talon had welcomed him as Lord of what he thought was his House, but Farad had told him only the Prince, the rightful King of the Amontir, could do so. Was Talon then Dewalaren, the King Farad had saved from Madness twelve years ago?
