I had just taken off my lace poncho when Joe called out, “Claire, is that you?”

“Yes, coming.”

I lay beside him on the bed. He reached for me and I snuggled down on his chest. Rose jumped up with us.

“How’s the Citizen’s Guide going?”

“I decided to just ask you questions. When I read, I feel like this is all a strange dream. I mean, basic how-to flying and how to treat your cloud — unreal.”

I kissed his cheek. “Shall I pinch you?”

“No, but give me a big kiss, that should do it.”

We kissed, hugged, and kissed again.

“Okay, feels like your old kisses. Not like dream kisses.”

I laughed.

“Have you had anything to eat besides that scone?”

“No, and I’m ravenous. What do we have?”

I shrugged. “Anything you want. Cloud will prepare it.”

“Good grief — then yes, Cloud, I would like an omelet and a side of bacon.”

“What kind of omelet, Master Joe?” Cloud said.

Joe hesitated – it was hard to get used to having a servant if you’d done for yourself all your life. I nodded encouragement.

“Uh, cheese and onion, please.”

“Coming your way.”

A tray table settled in on Joe’s lap. A large omelet and a thick slab of maple-smoked bacon joined a small pink rose in a crystal bud vase.

“This smells delicious, thank you, Cloud.”

“Anything to drink, sir?”

Joe turned and whispered to me. “Do they have mimosas here?”

He was so serious, I tried not to laugh. “Yes, very good ones.”

“A mimosa, please.”

“Two, Cloud.”

Two tall flutes appeared on the tray. Joe took a sip. “Delicious!”

“Thank you. Will there be anything else?”

“No, Cloud, we’re fine for now,” I said.

“I can’t get over this cloud system.”

“Did you read about it?”

“A little. Is it a computer?”

“Not computers the way we knew the concept on Earth. All the clouds in Heaven are networked together to meet angels’ needs. It’s a bit like a butler, cook, personal assistant, concierge, tour guide—you name it. You’ll get more comfortable with it as the days pass. They are amazing and very helpful.”

“So, no cooking in Heaven? You must love that.”

“I do, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Regina cooks most of the time. Her cloud gathers recipes and ingredients for her some of the time, sometimes she shops.”

Joe took a bite of bacon. “Yes, I can see that, she always loved to cook.”

“She’ll have us over soon. I’m in the habit of going there at least once a month.”

“Time … works the same here?”

“Yes, typically we have hours and days in synch with Earth.”

“Why’s that?”

“Not really sure. Must just have evolved that way. I know in the beginning days, other things were organized quite differently.”

“Such as—?”

“Like the neighborhoods. We live in an American community. Most of our neighbors are Jews and Christians from the 20th and 21st Centuries. But if we wanted, we could live with Japanese from the 10th Century in the Japanese community who practiced Shinto and believed in Buddha – I met him once, by the way. Think it’s just worked out that people are more comfortable with some familiar references, touchstones to their former life.
