CHAPTER FOURTEEN
I wake up screaming, and this time I am not alone. Travis is shaking me and calling out my name. I tremble and shudder, forcing my eyes open and forcing the memories away. I swallow but my tongue feels like a dry chunk of wood. Travis has his arms around me; I can hear his frantic heartbeat in my ear. He strokes my hair and whispers soothing words into my ear.
“Mischief, it’s ok, it was just a dream.”
“Trav?” I croak.
“I got you, it was just a dream.”
I pull back and blink away the sleep in my eyes. The lamp is on but the light is dull. I look at Travis and run my eyes over his disheveled hair.
“That is why you don’t sleep at my place?” He whispers.
“I have them every night Trav; I don’t want to keep you awake.”
“God Mischief, you wound me.”
“I care.”
“I care too, shit Mischief, you are having nightmares every night?”
“Since Jeremy shot himself in front of me.”
“Fuck…”
“It’s ok Trav; I have learnt to live with it.”
“You shouldn’t have to live with it.”
“It’s ok.”
He takes my hand and presses his lips over my palm. Then he rests it against his cheek.
“Lay down.”
I blink a Moment “Pardon?”
“Lay down.”
I do as he says and he lays down beside me, propped up on his elbow looking down at me. Then, he opens his mouth and he begins singing. I feel my skin breakout in goose bumps and my heart speeds up. His voice soothes me, takes me to a place where nothing matters. It takes me to a place I went so many times as a child, when I was afraid, he was there just like he is now, and he always sang me the same song.
“Don’t cry Mischief.”
“She was awful to me Trav.”
“She isn’t very nice then is she?”
“She is my best friend and she called me a tattle tale and said she wasn’t my friend anymore.”
Travis strokes my hair, he is fifteen and probably has better things to do but he has his arm around me in our tree house, while I cry about Lillian.
“She was just mad that you told on her.”
“I didn’t want to get into trouble. Chief would have been cranky with me if I lied.”
“She will get over it, I promise.”
“Who will I play with?”
“Me, of course.”
“You are all grown up now Trav, you don’t want to play with me anymore. You just want to hang around all those girls.”
He laughs.
“I always have time for you Mischief.”
“Will you sing me a song?”
“Does it make you feel better?”
“Yes.”
“Then of course I will.”
He begins singing a song that he always sings when I am sad, I snuggle closer to him and already, I feel better.
You are my sunshine, my only sunshine,
You make my happy when skies are grey,
You’ll never know dear, how much I love you,
Please don’t take my sunshine away.
