Casper had been undecided about telling his father about remembering the nameâRico.
He decided against it. His father was still fresh into his second chance with the NYPD. Being partnered with Detective Bennie Mitchell so quickly after his return was a surprise. It finally occurred to Casper that other officers in the precinct might not be happy about it.
Things were going well for Bobby Halliday so far. And thanks to Sara Lawson, Casper gave his father and Detective Mitchell a lead on what appeared to be some serious criminal activity.
No, Casper didn't want to distract his father with the revelation. Not yet.
They ate, and then Bobby dressed and left for work. Casper picked up his phone and keyed in a number. A sleepy voice answered.
"Casper?"
"Yeah, it's me, Jerome."
Jerome Slade yawned loudly.
"Mmmm. Ghost Man, you know I work nights, right?"
"Yeah," Casper said. "Sorry about that. But I have a piece of information for you."
"Information about what?"
"The guys who kicked my ass," Casper said.
"Okay," Slade said. "What do you got?"
"The guy I kicked in the kneeâhe called somebody 'Rico'. I'm pretty sure it was the guy in charge. He was the one pointing that gun at my face."
"Rico..." Slade said. "That will narrow it down someâlike from five million dudes down to five thousand. When did you remember this?"
"About three o'clock this morning," Casper said. "After two sleeping pills and a sackful of nightmares."
"Actually," Slade said. "This should be easy. All I have to find is a street hood named Rico hanging out with a dirt-bag on crutches."
Casper scratched his head.
"Guy on crutchâ? Oh, yeah. I didn't think about that. That knee will never be the same, I'll bet."
"May I should be the detective," Slade said. "And you can break up bar fights."
"That would be sweet, wouldn't it?" Casper said. "The first part, I mean."
"Too bad, so sad," Slade said. "I'm not the one who walked out of Fishkill with a clean record."
"I got lucky, Jerome," Casper said. "Real lucky."
"You got lots of luck, Caz. But it ain't all good."
"Yeah," Casper said.
"I'm going back to sleep," Jerome said. "I don't work tonight. I'll do some askin' around."
"Thanks, bud."
"Come on, man," Slade said. "We don't call people shit like that in my hood. Bro, or dawg, something like that."
Casper laughed.
"Go back to sleep, my brother."
Slade laughed.
"Close enough."
