My phone blew up the second I closed my laptop. By that point I was ready for a break—I'd managed to talk Corey into sending me a little more work to do which ended up being more than a little. Now, I was ready for some relaxation.

There was a text from Sam on the phone letting me and the rest of the wedding crew know that now was the time to start heading to the Sherwood. A drink sounded great, but I had more on my mind tonight than having fun.

The whole thing with Peter and Mark and Alice sat strangely with me. Peter seemed convinced, but I wondered why he was so keen on telling me about it. Was it simply a matter of me being there at the exact moment he wanted to get it off his chest?

Didn't matter. What did matter was that I needed to figure out if there was any truth to it, while not letting Sam know that Jenny and I were working together.

I hopped up out of my chair, pulling off my white V-neck T-shirt and tossing it onto the bed. As I did, I pictured Jenny in my room like she'd been earlier in the day, her face blushing as I gave her some lighthearted teasing.

Being around her was a nonstop exercise in restraint. Her simply being here in my room, just the two of us, had been enough to get me thinking some very bad thoughts. I don't know what I'd have done if she'd said “fuck it” to the whole thing, stripped off her clothes like she'd done last night, and fell back onto the bed, that impossibly sexy teasing smile on her face.

But she hadn't, so it wasn't even worth thinking about. As much as I wanted her, she'd made her own desires clear—she wanted distance. Sure, she'd made some other intentions known last night, but I knew enough to know that what you said and did when you were trashed didn't necessarily reflect what you wanted sober.

Not sleeping with her last night had been a no-brainer. And now it was too—she'd told me what she wanted, and I had to be an adult and respect it.

But damned if it wasn't difficult. The girl could show up in the morning, hungover and in some comfy clothes and still look like the most beautiful thing I'd ever seen in my life.

I let out a sigh as I stepped out of my track pants and reached for a pair of dark jeans. Once I was in front of the mirror, I clapped my hands down onto the lines of my abs, a worry about how I'd been slacking on my fitness routine flashing in my mind. I knew a hard workout would be the best way to get out the stress, and I made a mental note to get one in at the hotel gym.

Then again, I thought, there are other, more fun workouts to do than lifting weights.

Oh god, another mental voice shot back, like a restrained Dr.
