Ten or so years ago, I had an idea for a story. This is not at all unusual, mind you. It happens all the time. I made a few notes and set it aside to let it perk because I was in the middle of writing another book. About a year later, as I was pondering my next project, I was going through my notes trying to find something that leaped out and said “Now! My turn!” I can’t really explain it any better than to say that some ideas need to stew in that pot on the back burner for a long time before they’re ready to cooperate (looking at you, Rafer Crawford!).

In this case, the notes I’d made the year before suddenly sparked a new idea about a special couple and their even more special dog. The couple had yet to find each other, but when they did, they found not only love but a life calling. And out of that was born the Cutter’s Code series, with that furry rapscallion Cutter playing a major and continuing role. And now, after twelve books, I finally came back to that original idea and found it was more than ready to cooperate. So in that weird way that things happen in my fictional worlds, book number lucky thirteen in the series is in fact the idea that started it all, finally come to fruition.
