CHAPTER SIX

THE NEXT MORNING’S surgeries came rapidly, one after the other, without leaving time to think about anything but their patients. Daniel figured Annabelle had probably been glad about that since she’d hurried ahead of everyone when it was time to break for lunch and he doubted it was because she was extra-hungry.

She was half-done by the time he sat down with his meal, and he watched her gobble her lunch with even more gusto than usual. Yeah, there was no doubt it was more about her wanting to be done and out of the hotel dining room than her enjoyment of the meal.

His fault. He’d made her feel uncomfortable when he’d admitted he wanted to make love with her. Looking back, he probably shouldn’t have taken advantage of the two of them being all alone in the middle of the night. Talking then kissing in a room that had only one fairly small bed.

But he hadn’t been able to resist. When her sweet face had looked up into his, vulnerability and guilt filling her misty eyes as she’d confessed her error and how bad she felt about it, he’d lowered his mouth to hers before he’d known he was going to. And the second his lips had touched hers, he was gone. All he’d been able to think about was the taste of her and the feel of her and how much he wanted to see her naked. To touch every inch of her soft skin and make love with her until the pain and scare and disappointment in herself on that harrowing day were forgotten.

If the baby monitor hadn’t gone off, he knew he would have taken it further, and had a feeling she wouldn’t have resisted. But since she’d now told him loud and clear that she didn’t do flings, and the only thing he could offer a woman was short-term companionship and lovemaking, anything between them was out of the question.

Except apparently a part of his mind and body kept forgetting that, as he couldn’t seem to keep his eyes off her. Couldn’t seem to keep what he was thinking off his face, and since she’d quickly turn away every time their eyes met, she obviously saw it plain as day.

Since her attention was now firmly on her plate, he furtively watched her eat, thinking about her lips and how they’d tasted, something he couldn’t get out of his head, no matter how hard he tried. A conversation between Jennifer and Karina vaguely touched his ears before he heard the sudden, insistent ringing of a phone. Annabelle practically jumped from her chair, pulled her phone from her pocket and hurried toward the front door.

“I need to take this.”

Even as he tried to make small talk with the other women, his mind was on Annabelle and her call. Was it the person she’d been wanting to hear from so much? Was she getting her meeting set up in Lima and, if so, when would that happen?
