CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Bree had originally refused when Ryland encouraged her to stay at his cabin while on leave from her job. But the appeal of him having her back if the man who’d forced her off the cliff came after her was too hard to resist. Especially since the identity of that man was still in question. According to Gatlinburg PD, Palmer hadn’t gone to his mother’s house as he’d told Sheriff Peterson he would. No one knew where he was right now. Which meant no one had seen his car, and whether or not it was damaged.

Bree, of course, believed Palmer had disappeared so he could get the damage fixed. All she could do was hope that once he finally reappeared, an expert would be able to determine whether the vehicle had been repaired. Of course, if it hadn’t been repaired, then she was back to having no clue who was trying to kill her.

For the past few days, Bree and Ryland had spent their time mostly at his cabin, discussing the ongoing investigations and fielding calls from the UB investigators—with the exception of Ivy and Callum. Those two preferred to review the Slayer files on their own first, without being swayed by Bree’s opinions or perspective.

Even though Bree longed to be officially back at work, it was no hardship waking up to gorgeous Ryland every day. Of course, waking up to him in the same bed as her would have been far better. But they were keeping things professional, or as professional as they could in spite of the undercurrents of attraction sparking between them. The memory of that earth-shattering kiss was never far from the surface. Pretending it had never happened was becoming more and more difficult. So when Ivy finally asked Bree to come to UB headquarters to give her perspective on the Slayer killings, she and Ryland had jumped at the chance.

Bree lined up five photos in the middle of the conference room table. “Now that I’ve provided the overview on the murder scenes and what we did to investigate the crimes, let’s take it back to victimology. These are our five victims, during happier times obviously. Ada Cardenas was a single mom, never married, with one child. Tammy Wilcox was also single, but no kids.” She pointed to a third picture. “Robyn Morton, divorced, no kids. These two at the end are Candy Morrison and Joanna Sanford, the only victims who were married. Joanna had kids. Candy didn’t.”

Ryland looked across the table at Ivy and Callum. “The victims couldn’t be more different physically either. As you can see, their hair varies from blond to dark brown, short to long, straight to curly. They’re all relatively young, but there’s still a variation in their ages. The main thing they seem to have in common is that they’re attractive females.”

Ivy idly tapped the table. “That’s what Callum and I concluded too. What about geographical similarities? I don’t know your county, Bree, so that’s hard to glean just from their addresses.
