CHAPTER EIGHT

Amberley didn’t sleep well that night. She wasn’t a heartless monster—she understood where Will was coming from. And when they were at dinner at the club she’d realized that he was going to take some extra time if they were going to be more than friends. And being friends…well, how could she not be his friend.

She was hurt. She didn’t hook up and sleep around, not anymore. She had found a place for herself where she’d started to adjust to her life. She’d begun to feel like she’d found a peace that had always been just out of reach. Then Will Brady showed up, arousing feelings from her past and reawakening the passion she’d thought she’d buried a long time ago.

But as she stared down at her breakfast cereal she knew she had wanted some kind of romantic fantasy. That was the problem with watching as much television as she did and reading as many books. There were times when she just wanted her life to have a little more romance than it did.

Last night in his car, Will had made her feel things that she hadn’t ever felt before. It had been more intense than the other times she’d had sex.

She wasn’t really eating her cereal so she carried the bowl to the sink, and even though she knew she should clean it out right now, she just dumped the bowl in the sink, rinsed the cereal down the drain and then left it.

She had told Clay that she’d break in one of the newer horses and she intended to use Sunday morning to do it. She had a lesson this afternoon and then she needed to keep practicing her barrel riding, as she was signed up for a rodeo at the beginning of November.

But this morning all she had to do was get Squire ready for riding and lessons. The hands mostly had their own horses or used some of the saddle horses that Clay kept on the ranch. And Amberley’s job was to make sure they were all in good shape and exercised if they weren’t being used.

She heard some sounds coming from the stall set away from the other animals at the end of the stables and turned in that direction. She saw Sophie, Clay’s pregnant wife, standing outside the stall talking to the bull inside of it.

“Sophie? Everything okay?” Amberley asked as she walked down toward her.

The stall held Iron Heart…the very same bull that had ended Clay’s bull-riding career. Clay had saved the animal from being euthanized and brought him to the Flying E ranch.

“Yeah, just talking about stubbornness with someone who understands it.”

Amberley had to laugh. “Clay.”

Sophie nodded. “You’d think I was the first woman to ever be pregnant.”

Babies again. It seemed that no matter how hard she tried she couldn’t get away from pregnancy or babies. “I think it’s sweet how protective he is.”

“Well, that’s probably because you’re not the one being smothered,” Sophie said with a small smile.

“I was once the one being ignored and told not to have a baby,” Amberley said.
