Chapter 8

“I know she’s in there.” The voice chilled my blood.

“Kapaneus,” I breathed.

Orion was on his feet in a moment, pulling his pants on. Orion didn’t know my history with Kapaneus. Neither did Kapaneus know who I really was. They were charging into this with nothing more than male hormones running wild. It was a recipe for disaster.

He threw the curtain back and stepped out, giving me a moment to collect myself.

“Is there a problem here?” Orion demanded. I didn’t miss the anger in his voice. Our moment had been shattered by Kapaneus’s arrogance, and I believed Orion would make him pay for it.

“You’re hogging the whore,” Kapaneus said like some kind of indignant five-year-old.

“What?”

Orion didn’t know our story. He had no idea Jayson told Kapaneus I was a wench they’d gotten for quite awhile. Would he inadvertently reveal me? Panic filled my mind as I tried to pull my dress on with shaky hands.

“What seems to be the problem here?” Calix said, and I calmed down as much as I could. Calix would smooth things over. He would keep the peace at his party.

Orion spoke first. “Kapaneus here seems to be laboring under the impression that—”

Calix cut him off. “Kapaneus. You know the rules about the curtains. There are plenty of free beds. Just choose another one.”

“I don’t want another bed. I want his woman. He’s had her long enough,” Kapaneus insisted.

I couldn’t bring myself to go out and face him. I wasn’t sure what I’d do, but my instincts were waffling wildly between running, and my favorite—punching him in the face, landing him flat on his back, and then stomping on his throat, crushing his windpipe. While it was a rather satisfying thought, I wasn’t sure that would go over very well, based on past experience with the bastard.

“How dare you,” Orion started, and the heat from his words travelled through the curtain and across my skin, making my anger at the situation jump several notches. Something the others said about Orion’s temper whispered at the back of my mind, and I wondered just how close Kapaneus was dancing to Orion’s line.

“Now, I don’t think Kapaneus meant any insult, did you, Kap?” Calix said, rather firm at the end.

Kapaneus didn’t respond. I could just picture him seething out there.

“What seems to be the problem?” Jayson’s voice joined the mix, and I knew Damaris and Petra probably weren’t far behind.

“Oh, good. Now the whole gang is here. You think I want her after all five of you have passed her around? No. I want her now,” Kapaneus demanded.

I’d had enough. I pulled the curtain back and all the men fell silent.

“That’s a shame, Kapaneus. Because I don’t want you.” I pushed past all the men, and headed for the door, using every ounce of strength I had not to turn around and punch that asshole in the face.

“She can’t talk to me like that,” Kapaneus screamed.

I didn’t dare look over my shoulder, but from the struggle, I knew someone was holding him back.
