Chapter 10

I woke up with the sun, more than a little sore. Hobbling to the house, I walked into a rather heated discussion happening around the kitchen table.

“No. We’re not changin’ the plan just because two of you can’t focus.” I recognized Theron’s drawl without having laid eyes on him.

I shut the door as quietly as I could, but they’d already seen me. Damned open floor plan.

“Sorry. I didn’t mean to interrupt,” I said as I limped away from the door.

“You okay?” Alex asked.

“You care?” I snapped.

“Now now. I think you’re being a bit hard on Alex here.” Theron’s comment earned him a solid glare, and he threw his hands up in surrender. Didn’t the others know how he’d shown up on the path threatening me? Why was he defending Alex? He wasn’t their ally. Or didn’t they know?

“I’m just going to go to my room and soak in the tub for the next millennia.” I said, wanting to get away from them, and their games.

Xanthe got up in a rush from the table. “Before you do that, I have a surprise for you.”

“No more physical activity.” I eyed him warily.

“I promise. No more.”

He offered me his arm. When he saw that wasn’t enough, he put it around my waist, and supported me as he led me out back. There was a long dock with his famed see-through floor. On it, right at the end on top of the panel, was what looked like a massage table.

“Is that what I think it is?” I asked, picking up the pace as much as I could.

“Indeed it is.”

“Gods bless you,” I said as I collapsed on the table. There was another small table off to the side with oils and lotions on it, as well as a temporary shade above, with tropical flowers hanging down. Frankly, it was rather idyllic.

“How come there’s only one table? Aren’t you getting one too?”

“No, I’m giving it. Now peel that suit off, and get under the sheet.” He pulled the sheet back before deliberately turning around and busying himself with opening the oils.

Gods knew I wasn’t shy, but I appreciated his attempt at sparing my modesty.

I stripped and lay face down on the table, pulling the sheet back over me. Although Darius had massaged me plenty of times, he’d never done it on a table like this, and I had to say, it was bliss. My neck wasn’t at an odd angle, the water gently lapped along the nearby shore, and I could see fish swimming beneath me through the glass opening as he pulled the sheet down to the small of my back.

“Let’s get started.” He lowered his voice to this semi-whispery register that had me giggling.

“What?” he asked in that same voice.

“You’re taking this pretty seriously, huh?”

“You said you wanted a day at the spa, so I’m giving it to you. Now, just relax.”

I took a deep breath, and tried to calm my giggles as he began touching me with warm, freshly oiled hands.

His massage was perfect, but somehow different from the way Darius had touched me.
