Chapter 5

It couldn’t be true. Ryan refused to believe it. He gazed at his neurologist in horror, the words the man had uttered still echoing in his disbelieving mind.

“You think I might have a fucking growth in my head?” The words sounded strange and he couldn’t help swearing. Ryan gripped the desk tightly, trying to anchor himself in reality because this whole scenario had to be a bad dream. He hadn’t expected this when he’d come for yet another medical appointment in the past couple of weeks. His doctors hadn’t been able to determine the cause of his current condition, so he’d been referred to the neurologist. The man had been thorough and had prodded, poked and checked him for the past forty minutes before telling him he was through.

Doctor Trin nodded compassionately. “An MRI will show us exactly what we are dealing with and I’ll be booking an appointment for you as soon as possible. At this stage I can’t say exactly what’s going on in there. But the symptoms and the things you’ve been experiencing sound like it might be a possibility.”

Ryan sat back in the plastic chair, dazed. “I never thought—I didn’t think it would be something so serious. Eye strain perhaps, maybe a trapped nerve—I never thought it could be a growth. Shit, this is—” Words failed him and he ran a nervous, trembling hand through his hair. “So what happens now? I go for this MRI and if you find anything, you open up my brain?” He was aware his voice was almost a shriek.

Doctor Trin smiled, his placid face soothing. “Mr Bishop, I’ve seen a lot of cases and most of them are treatable with surgery. I can’t say much more until we do the MRI, see if what I suspect is true. If so, we need to determine where the growth is and whether it can be removed. That, however, is thinking too far ahead. First we need to see what we are dealing with.”

Ryan’s heart beat faster. “What if it’s cancerous? What happens after that?” His hands were cold and clammy and he wanted to throw up.

Doctor Trin shook his head. “We will do this one step at a time, yes? First we see what is going on. Then we tackle the rest of it.” His eyes softened. “Mr Bishop, I can assure you, we will deal with each problem, if there are any, as it arises. I know it sounds as if I’m making light when I tell you to try not to worry but at this point there’s no need to think the worst—so try not to worry unduly.”

He pulled his pad towards him and popped a pair of black-rimmed spectacles on his nose. “I will make an appointment for the MRI as soon as I can, and once we have a result, we will determine next steps between us. I promise to keep you informed every step of the way and I will not sugar coat anything. You will
