The Purple Monkey

Jessie Chandler

Taylor Young was on her twelfth date in as many days, and things were going downhill fast. This one’s going to kill me, she thought as she sneezed again. Damn allergies. Her sinuses could locate a cat owner at fifty paces.

Thirteen days before, she’d been at one hell of a house party, blowing off steam with her longtime pal, LaKeisha St. Croix. She and Keisha had grown up together, had gone to college and graduated from the police academy together. Both wound up working for the same metro police department—Keisha in Homeland Security and Taylor in Gangs. It was rare they wound up with the same days off, so when they did they made the most of it.

Assisted by a batch of homemade seventy proof apple pie moonshine, the shindig ran into the wee hours. In the course of conversation, the topic of hookups had come up, and someone mentioned “marathon” dating—a number of Internet dates set up one right after another. A well-on-her-way-to-blitzed reveler confessed to having dated six different women she’d met online in six days.

Taylor was a cop first, a big-mouth-when-drunk second and a serial one-night-stander as long as anyone could remember. Women loved her and she loved women, one glorious night at a time. The thought of settling down with anyone gave her hives. But her wild ways had given her a lot of dating experience, which was why her big mouth had kicked in before her alcohol-soaked brain could keep up. “Six dates in six nights? Hell, I could do fifteen.”

Keisha had nearly choked on her apple pie. “You? Date fifteen women in fifteen days? My black ass you could. You work way too much. You gonna take them out at 2:00 a.m. to an all-night diner? Besides, you’re too picky to hook up with anyone off the Internet. No real-time seal of approval.”

That was all true, but Taylor had a ferocious competitive streak. “You think I’m a chick snob?”

“I don’t think, smartass,” Keisha said. “You have a type. Dark and hot.”

Well, that was true, too, but beside the point. Though she wasn’t really clear on what the point was. Not so much damn moonshine next time was probably a good idea.

“I can do it. In fact, I’ll make you a bet. I bet you…” she narrowed slightly unfocused eyes at Keisha. “I date fifteen women in fifteen days and you,” she raked her gaze over Keisha’s St. Paul PD T-shirt, cargo pants, and old pair of beat up work boots, “you have to wear a dress to the police academy reunion. With those spaghetti strappy things on the shoulders. A real princess outfit.”

“But—”

Taylor wagged a finger at her. “And heels.”

“Pantyhose!” an inebriated friend helpfully yelled. Soon the air was filled with the chant, “PAN-TEE-HOSE! PAN-TEE-HOSE!”

Keisha laughed. “Bullshit, sister. You won’t survive fifteen dates in fifteen days. Something will come up at work or you’ll sleep through one because you worked too late. Or something else will distract you, Ms. ADD. And it’s only three weeks till the reunion, so you gotta start tomorrow.
