HE STOOD BY his desk, looking out the window. Agent Bevee didn’t mind receiving these regular calls from the assistant director. Updating him on the progress he was making was a part of the job. He was standing because what he was about to report frustrated him. He wished he could report everything was going precisely as planned, but he could not.

The sheriff was even more of a problem than he originally thought. The man was too stubborn for his own good. He was just a simple county sheriff. What was going on was way over his head. He should stop standing in the way of progress.

He glanced at his watch; it read nine thirty on the nose. Before he could get his sleeve pushed back into place, the phone rang. You could find fault with the AD in some ways, but he was prompt.

“Good morning, sir…Yes, I’ve made progress. I used the search warrant to gain access to the subject’s home, and I presented the evidence to the local sheriff…Yes sir. I wish I could say so, but the sheriff refused to make the arrest…Thank you, sir, I think that would be helpful. I appreciate any assistance dealing with this county official. Yes sir…I’m not sure I trust the local DA to do what he’s told…Yes sir, that’s what I was thinking…Yes sir…I’m happy to do it…Thank you, sir. Goodbye.”
