Chapter Thirteen

I snatched my hand back. What was with Nate’s hot and cold routine? Did he think it turned women on? In which case, shit, was I that fallible, despite my supposed-smarts? Did a double degree count for nothing? Because I was sure as heck turned on.

But that had more to do with his toga than his attitude.

A sudden thought stopped me from drawing away from him; was it possible the contradictions in his behavior were because Nate was as conflicted about the boundaries as me? Because there was no point pretending otherwise; when Travis had suggested the guys split the incoming booby bounty, I’d been ready to scratch out the other women’s eyes the second they honed in on Nate.

Like he was mine.

I pinched at the bridge of my nose, blowing out a tense breath. No, no, no. This was all wrong. I wasn’t supposed to feel a damn thing except for horny.

“You okay, Freckles?”

I was being ridiculous. No matter how screwed up my head was — and I didn’t even have alcohol to blame — Nate didn’t have the same issue. Guys always got to make the call on relationship parameters. Whether they wanted it to be exclusive or a hookup, the choice was always theirs.

Unless, like Damien, they didn’t grasp the concept of making a choice.

“Yeah, sure. You’re right. Fresh air.” Something had to clear my head.

“Grab your drink.” Nate waited while I snatched up the foam cup. Then he tugged me toward a very unRoman mirror ball in the center of the room, where a couple of girls twerked hard enough to make me hope there was a chiropractor aboard.

“I decided to stick with water,” Nate said. “Hope that’s okay. Clear heads, no regrets.” He glanced back toward the bar. “I’m pretty sure Trav’s not going to remember anything by tomorrow.”

Regrets? Did he plan on doing something we could regret? I sure hoped so because, despite my lack of experience, that sounded like fling-speak to me. At least one of us had an eye on the boundaries.

The noise of the crowd swelled as the music changed, and I squinted up at him. “Sorry, what?”

His chest swelled as he took a deep breath and pitched above the music. “I think we have to dance at least once. Tick it off the vacation bucket list.”

Vacation list? For a traumatized second, I thought he knew about The Vagina’s Vacation file, supposedly safe on my hard drive. aside

But then his arm slipped around my waist, pulling me in close, and I yelped, jerking aside my cup of water to avoid pouring it down his chest. And to keep my arm out of the way because, my nipples pressed hard against his abs, I didn’t want anything between us. Not even the thin cotton of our togas.

Which wouldn’t be an issue for long, as any moment now the fabric would self-combust.

Nate grinned, then pressed his lips to my ear. “It’s okay, I don’t mind if you get me all wet.”

I so wasn’t the one making anyone wet.
