EVENTUALLY we made it downstairs to his bed, where we curled up and fell asleep practically immediately. I ached in really good places, Sam was like a freaking furnace, and we were tangled together. This was pretty damn close to bliss.

I woke up drooling on Sam’s pillow, hogging every blanket on the bed. Eyelashes fluttering, I groaned, rolling over and reaching out before I even processed where I was. Sam’s side of the bed was empty, but I could hear him moving around out in the kitchen, and I caught a whiff of cinnamon and coffee. Breakfast. Peering over at the clock, I had to huff a laugh. Breakfast for dinner, then. Totally up my alley.

I tugged my T-shirt on and padded out to find Sam. The floor was chilly against my bare feet, my boxers were hanging low around my hips, and I was positive my hair was sticking up everywhere. I didn’t particularly care, though; first priority was wrapping my arms around Sam’s waist and kissing his shoulder. He’d neglected to put on a shirt, and I let my fingers play along the waistband of his sweats, smiling when his stomach hitched in a quick breath.

“Hey,” he rumbled, leaning back into me. “You’re up.”

“And you’re cooking.” I smiled, kissing his neck, feeling so freaking good. He was dipping bread into what looked like eggs before putting them into a hot pan.

“French toast.” He turned his head and kissed my ear, grinning. We both were grinning like idiots and I, for one, didn’t want to stop. Sam looked so relaxed like this. That gruff scowl that had permanently creased between his eyes was gone now. When his gaze caught on me, his whole expression softened. “I know it’s not really our first breakfast, but I wasn’t sure what you’d want for dinner, and french toast is kind of a universal crowd pleaser.”

“It smells fantastic,” I assured him. So did he. His hair was still damp, he smelled like soap and aftershave and us, and, under all of that, the sharp spice I associated with Sam.

“There’s a fresh towel and toothbrush and stuff in the bathroom,” Sam told me. “If you wanted to wash up. We’ve got another ten minutes before this is ready.”

“Sounds fantastic.” I hesitated, though, worrying the inside of my cheek. “I just have to run up to my office.”

After putting the last piece of bread in the pan, Sam turned, frowning, to rub a hand down my arm. “Everything okay?”

See, this was why I’d never done well at dating. What should have been a simple thing—have a romantic shower together—I now had to search for a plausible explanation as to why I was going to be different. Why I couldn’t just hop in that easily. I’d come up with some weird-ass lies over the years. Except with Sam, I could just… tell the truth.

Huh. This was going to be interesting.

“I have to take a dust bath first,” I sighed, rubbing the back of my neck, giving him a sheepish glance.
