Silence hung between Carly and Spike. He stood there giving her what she thought of as his puppy dog stare. Once upon a time, that look would have fooled her but that had been a long time ago. Now Carly knew that stare was just a cover. Below it, he was trying to figure out what angle to play. He treated people like he treated the cue balls on the pool tables in the bars where he gambled all across the country. He lined them up so that they would drop right into whatever pocket he aimed them at, and he was used to winning.

She refused to look away or speak, knowing that either of those things would give him an opening he could wriggle through. And wriggle was the right word for him, he had proven himself to be a snake more times than she could count.

“Oh that was all a big misunderstanding,” he’d say. He even managed to look innocent, or as innocent as he ever did anyway. A woman walking by nearly broke her neck staring at him and Spike almost, but not quite, managed not to wink at her. His eye twitched rapidly for a second, if Carly had not known better, she would have thought he had developed a nervous tic.

“A misunderstanding? You tried to blackmail Gale Rubens, after you slept with her in the van I slept in with you, you dirty rotten bastard. Worse, you taped it and threatened to play it for her husband!”

“No worries, it is all good now. Gale’s husband understood and after she calmed down Gale agreed to drop the charges. I mean I never did ask her for money.”

“No, just a brand new van.”

“We needed it baby.”

“Oh do not put that off on me or anyone else in the band! You cheated on me with Gale because you thought she would let you join her band and when she said no you got all butt hurt and tried to blackmail her, pure and simple. Save your self-righteous lies for someone who will actually buy it.”

“Why is it every time I try to do something for the greater good people always think it is just about me?” He assumed a wounded expression that would have fooled anyone except anyone who knew him.

“Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t realize when you stuck your dick into the woman we were opening for you were taking one for the team.” She injected as much sarcasm as she could muster into her words, which turned out to be quite a lot.

“We all would have used the van you know. Besides, at least I did not leave you holding the bag at the club like our so-called manager and drummer. I mean, I got arrested, which is a lot different than simply skipping town. We should both be pissed at them, not each other. Not that I am pissed at you, when you came to the jail to see me and said
