CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

~Candi~

Candi shivered, glad for the warm arms that cradled her against a solidly muscled, very naked chest. She'd had the weirdest dream. Nick had tried to kill her, and Clayton and all his friends turned into animals to save her. Clay's animal had been a stunningly large brown beast. And Clay, there was something else about Clay, too. What was it?

She reached her arms up over her head to stretch, trying to wake up. Pain knifed through her shoulder, radiated down her arm to her fingertips and through her chest. Her head throbbed in echo of that pain. Shit, what the fuck was going on here? She froze mid-stretch, and gingerly returned her hands to her stomach in a sort of hug. Even the slow motion sent fire tearing through her shoulder.

She fought for focus, blinking rapidly to clear her eyesight. The bright lights of what appeared to be a clinic were damn near blinding. The dregs of her dream, or nightmare, still floated through her mind. Strong arms really were wrapped around her, cradling her tightly to a naked chest. Clay's chest. Damn. She wanted to caress those sexy muscles, but she was too chicken to brave the pain that more moving would cause.

A cool, collected voice pulled Candi's attention outward, away from her whirling thoughts and that oh so sexy chest.

"She's lost a fair bit of blood. And she's in shock."

"But she's going to be okay, right?"

Clay's chest rumbled against her cheek when he spoke. The doctor's reply was carefully neutral. Typical. Candi fought to focus her attention on the doctor’s voice. He was surprisingly young, for a doctor.

"She should be. We're running her blood type now just in case. The nurse will start a saline drip, which will help. If that's not enough to bring her out of this, we've got enough blood banked to finish the job."

Candi's head swam, as did her vision. Movement in the corner behind the doc drew her attention. Something was there. Something almost, but not quite, invisible. And bear shaped. As the ghostly form solidified, and its bright eyes met hers, her memories followed suit, growing more tangible with each passing moment.

"Tucker." She thought she'd whispered the ghost's name, but apparently not. The rasp of her voice stopped the conversation flowing around her.

"My brother." Clay's voice was hard and clipped. Was he hurt? There was a rasp of pain beneath the harsh tone he'd used. Candi dared another glance at the corner, but the ghostly bear was gone. Had he really been there to begin with, or was he a figment of her imagination? She wanted to touch her shoulder again, to feel the pain that would bring clear thoughts. The pain that would drive home the truth of what was real and what she’d only dreamt, for lack of a better term. Despite her solid tugs against Clayton’s grip, her hand stayed caught fast. His fingers barely tightened with each tug.

"Don't touch the wound again, Candi.” The sound of tearing foil distracted her from her need to triple check that she’d really been shot.
