Chapter Five

Blaise didn't understand anything anymore. He'd thought he had a fair idea of where he stood, but apparently not. Apparently, all this time, he'd been working on a flawed premise.

He'd been convinced that the herald would never lie to him. It would have made far more sense that Aran had been the one in the wrong. Even if he'd instinctively trusted Aran, a little spark of hope had still lingered.

And then, they'd traveled back to the Great Wolven Kingdom and Blaise felt like he'd been punched straight in the chest—twice. First, he'd realized Aran was actually his mate, and that he'd come to this realization in his parents' burnt bedchambers, and his world was unbalanced.

He held onto Aran, because everything was too confusing, and his parents were dead and gods help him, he had no idea where to go from here. Revenge? Leadership? What did he know about that? He didn't lack education—his guardian and his parents had taken care of that—but that didn't mean he was in any way ready for what a position of leadership would entail.

It didn't get much better when the herald arrived and actually started to explain.

"I'm going to tell you a little story, Blaise. A few decades ago, there was a shifter prince. He was arrogant and self-righteous and he did not care much about humans."

Blaise opened his mouth to ask how this story was in any way relevant, but his guardian's stern expression stopped him from speaking.

"In fact, none of his family did, and it was causing strife in his kingdom. Thus, the gods turned their eyes toward his lands, toward the shifters and what they had done. They cursed the shifters to be trapped into their second form, unable to turn back, mere shadows of what they had been, beasts more than people. The only one who could break the curse was the arrogant prince.

"And he did, indeed, break it, but it took several decades to do so. By then, countless had died, the cursed shifters having fallen to the still resentful humans. The only way to fix it was to undo what had happened. And so the wheel of time was turned, and the cursed prince was given another chance. The burden of this chance had to be paid by his pain, and that of his mate."

Blaise began to see where the herald was going with this. "Those two people... They were my parents, right?"

The herald nodded. "Indeed, Blaise, and they performed their role admirably. But time is cruel and even the magic of the powers I serve is not without its price. The world instinctively tries to go back to the way it was. The lesson that was taught was a difficult one, but your parents were the only ones who truly learned it. They were, for a long time, the only thing that stood in the way of disaster, but now, things are crumbling all over again."

Suddenly, his guardian looked very tired. "In some ways, the fault is mine, I admit that.
