Chapter Ten

Ava was glad she came to Vegas. She decided long ago that if she didn’t have the man she wanted, she didn’t want anyone. Michael had been through a lot, but even though he was the one causing problems for her sister, he was still a good man in Ava’s eyes.

She saw Michael looking out at the tables in the casino, but she wasn’t going to let him do anything stupid. Not on her watch. “Listen, before you leave for Chicago, let’s do something fun,” she said. “You remember what that is, don’t you?”

He looked as if she was crazy to think he would go anywhere with her. The two of them had not always been on the best of terms, but Michael was down on himself, so he listened. He didn’t really want to go back to Chicago alone, but he also didn’t feel like being rejected and then going home to his shitty existence.

“We can go anywhere you want,” Ava continued. “I have vacation time. A month or two, or whatever you need. Let’s just go and have a good time. We will worry when we get back. For now, let’s enjoy life.”

“Will that make it better?”

“I think it will. Sometimes the mind clears in different surroundings, and whatever wasn’t working will either work or it won’t. Haven’t you ever heard about freeing the mind from clutter?”

“Are you kidding me?”

“Have you ever wondered why we argue so much?” She was a bit sarcastic, but in her mind she had wanted to say a lot more. She had decided to turn over a new leaf by being a little bit more caring. Hopefully she had it in her.

Michael stopped at a bench and asked her to sit with him. She did so reluctantly, not wanting to hear what he was probably going to say. “There are some things we probably should have said years ago,” he began, “but now seems like a good time.”

She nodded, waiting for the shoe to drop. She deserved it for the way she broke up with him years ago—not that they were serious, but she did sleep with him. Michael was her first real love, but she didn’t know it until he was gone. By then, there was nothing she could do but put up a wall and be available when Victoria had enough. She just didn’t think it would take so many years.

“Look, Ava, I wouldn’t have brought this up, but you started. You and I are worlds apart. We don’t think alike or have anything in common. Oh, and by the way, everything you say usually infuriates the hell out of me. You’ve been a complete ass to me and never apologized for throwing me to the wind. Not that Victoria was the wind, but you never even said you were sorry.”

“Well, maybe I am sorry.”

“Oh, and you could have been a little nicer to Victoria, especially at the end of our marriage. She probably needed her sister. She’s always been there for you.
