Austin

Sunday afternoon, I’m walking from my place a couple streets over, to Adele’s. I’ve got my laptop bag with me because the plan is to have dinner with her and Dirk, the kids, and Aiden and Carly, then after dinner stop by the hospital once more to visit Dad and then get dropped at the airport. I haven’t messaged Jada yet to tell her I’m coming back tonight. I’ll be in late, but I figure I’ll surprise her when I get there and climb into bed with her. Weird to be thinking about going back there without a sense of dread – instead looking forward to it.

When I get two houses away from Adele’s place, I catch the sight of Sienna, who gets out of her car, obviously spotting me, too.

I freeze. Fuck. This shit again?

As she gets closer I see she doesn’t have her usual armor on. She’s not dripping with jewelry. She’s not even wearing make-up. In fact, she’s in shorts, a tank top and flip-flops without any makeup on and her hair a frizzy disaster.

“Stop,” I instruct. “I have nothing to say to you. From here on in, we talk through lawyers.”

“I’m late,” she says.

“What?”

“My period is late. I have a pregnancy test in the car. Or, well, three of them. To be sure. I’m gonna go home and take them, but I found myself here because Dad said you were in town because of Q and I was gonna ask your sister where your house was and then I saw Aiden’s motorcycle so figured if he was here, maybe you would be too. I was trying to work my nerve up to knock on the door.”

I cross my arms.

She bursts into tears.

I stand there, staring. I hate seeing a woman cry, fucking hate it going back to being seventeen and dealing with my ex Taylor’s bullshit, crying to get her way. I have zero patience for it, and with this bitch... the crying coupled with the words she just said to me? I’m floored.

Despite that she crumples, bawling her eyes out in the middle of the street, I don’t move an inch. I’m standing still like a cold and heartless bastard.

She pulls her hands away from her face. “Do you know what’ll happen if you don’t drop these charges, Austin?”

My lip curls.

She puts her hand on her stomach. “Our baby could be born in prison.”

“Whose baby?” I snap.

“Ours. Mine and yours.”

“And how do I know it’s mine?”

She shakes her head like she can’t believe the words out of my mouth. “It’s yours.”

I roll my eyes.

“I track my cycles and I ovulated when I was in St. Kitts. And I was due yesterday. I’m never late,” she says. “Never. And I’m late.”

“What the fuck do you want from me, Sienna?”

“Drop the charges so our baby won’t be born to a mother on the sex offender’s registry for starters. Stop looking at me like that for a second.”

“How convenient,” I say. “You’re ripe to get pregnant when Aiden’s getting married and you try to track him down so you can ruin his wedding and what.
