“You’re a grown man,” Isadora complained, “Stop behaving like a teenager and just spend the afternoon with her.”

“Isa,” I began.

She held up her hand. “Everyone knows.”

My mother was walking by us at the Golden Valley restaurant, where we’d just had breakfast. “What does everyone know?” she asked.

Isadora shook her head and walked away, annoyed.

“Is she talking about you and Maria?” my mother asked simply, and I sighed. Of course, she knew.

“Yes.”

“She’s lovely. I think you’re lucky she’s putting up with your nonsense about pretending you’re not dating her.”

“Mama, I have Silvano to think about.”

“Silvano can handle himself.” Her big brown eyes were amused. “I think you’re worried about yourself and not him. At least be honest with yourself.”

“Mama,” I protested.

She shook her head then and held up her hand. “I thought I raised you better than this.”

“And what is it I’m doing so wrong?” I demanded.

“It’s disrespectful to bring the woman you’re with and not introduce her to your family.”

Her words were more powerful than a punch to the solar plexus. “Mama, I respect her.”

She put a hand on my cheek. Since she was eight inches shorter than my six-three, like Isadora, I bent my head so she could reach me with ease when she went on tiptoe to kiss me on my forehead.

“I know you do, but you’re being unfair, mi hijo. She’s in love with you. If you’re not, now is the time to walk away.”

“She knows. I’ve been honest with her.”

My mother shrugged. “As Isadora just said, you’re a grown man. I can only hope you’ll make the right decisions.”

I nodded. “I need time to prepare Silvano.”

“Okay.” She smiled. “But I will not behave as if she’s just a guest. Okay?”

I leaned down and kissed her on her cheek “Thanks, Mama.”

I went to Maria’s room, not caring if the staff found out. My mother knew, which meant everyone knew. I needed to speak to Silvano pronto. But it would have to be after the weekend when I had more time, and she wasn’t in Golden Valley, taking up space in my heart and home.

I glanced over at Maria when she opened the door and my breath momentarily got caught in my throat. She was a vision of elegance and confidence. Her riding outfit hugged her body in all the right places, and I couldn’t help but be captivated by the way it accentuated her natural grace.

The fitted riding jacket, crafted from rich, supple leather, molded to her curves, highlighting the gentle curve of her waist and the delicate slope of her shoulders. The jacket's intricate stitching and tailored seams spoke of attention to detail, a trait that seemed to echo in every facet of Maria’s being.

Beneath the jacket, a pristine white riding shirt peeked out, its crisp collar adding a touch of sophistication. The shirt's fabric hinted at the softness beneath its structured exterior, a subtle reminder of the complexity within Maria herself.

Her riding pants, impeccably tailored and snug, emphasized the length of her legs, drawing my gaze downward before gracefully tapering into sleek, flawlessly polished riding boots.
