Zyere was the only person I trusted to cut my hair and what started as a trim ended up being a complete transformation. The locs that once trailed down my back were now shoulder length and completely shaved on one side. It would take some getting used to, but I was relieved to remove some of the weight. I watched as he went over to wash his hands in the basin.

“Well the way I see it, there is no winning in this situation. That island is no place for children and I wish Verna would see reason in that regard. I also know that losing that stipend was a blow to a lot of people. I’m sure we won’t have any volunteers for next year at the rate things are going. No matter what choice you make, take the child, or disobey orders and tell the grandmother to flee with the child, you’re screwed.”

I nodded and brushed the stray bits of hair from my neck and shoulders.

“Yeah, I know,” I muttered. “That’s why I need your help, Zyere. Like I said, being on the island is no walk in the park, but I need a second in command to help me restore order.”

Zyere sighed and plopped down on the stool next to his bed. “I guess Sister Nyla will need to make a pack for the two of us then.”

My heart lept with joy and relief. Zyere agreeing to come with me was a matter of life and death at this point and I was both happy he agreed and embarrassed to put him in this type of predicament. I couldn’t handle the men on my own and it was hard for me to admit that.

“In fact, I’ll do you one better,” said Zyere. I know you don’t want to be the one to make the call to take that child away, so I want you to head on down to the pub, grab a drink, and just meet me at the docks later. I’ll take those idiots with me so I can get a feel for them too. Once we have the child, we can leave together. You take a bit of time for yourself and don’t worry, I’ll handle the rest.”
