CHAPTER 26

As soon as Gael led the men into the torch-lit cavern, Leo spotted a pair of dark brown eyes looking back at him from the center of a huddled group of children. Dropping his backpack, he pushed his way through the damp crowded space and took Evita in his arms, lifting her up and holding her tight.

She was alive! For now that was all that mattered. He felt a renewed strength coursing through his veins, and no matter what happened next they would be together, for he vowed then and there that he would never leave her behind again.

For some reason, memories of Eduardo Acerbi and his wife Colette filled his thoughts. He had never seen a couple so devoted to one another. For over forty years, after Eduardo had given up a huge fortune and disappeared without a trace to be with the woman he loved, they had lived a quiet and peaceful life together, hidden from the glare of an increasingly intrusive world in a small French farmhouse.

Theirs had been a true love story, and for the first time in his life Leo was able to identify with the unshakeable bond he had observed through the years between couples in love. Now, holding Evita in his arms, he finally understood why Eduardo had abandoned a life of wealth and privilege so that he and Colette could live together in peace, for if a man truly loves a woman he will do whatever he has to do in order to keep her safe.

“I thought I’d never see you again,” Evita said, her tear-filled eyes peering up into his.

Leo held her tighter. “What happened?”

“The attack?”

“Yes. How did they find you?”

“We have no idea. It was a beautiful morning. I had just taken a group of children to play by the lake when a missile flew right over our heads and hit the warehouse. The force of the explosion knocked us off our feet, and when I looked up there was smoke everywhere and people were running outside to see what had happened. That’s when the second missile hit the castle. After that all I remember is running with the children toward the waterfall.”

Evita buried her head in Leo’s shoulder and sobbed quietly. “Not everyone made it out.”

Looking around the cavern, Leo estimated there were at least a hundred survivors crowded together in the tight space. “Is this everyone?”

Evita’s fingers dug into Leo’s sleeve as she peered over her shoulder. “I’m not sure. People were running in every direction. By the time the children and I reached the cave behind the waterfall the third missile hit the castle. It was a classic drone attack ... with multiple drones firing from different directions. As soon as we saw the castle collapse we moved away from the cave entrance and never looked back.”

“Cardinal!” Leo felt a thunderous clap on his back and looked up to see Alon supporting Nava as she limped along at his side.

“Alon ... Nava! Thank God you’re both safe.
