TONY AND I sat in the waiting room while Jackson took the elevator up to the fourth floor to visit his father, who remained unresponsive.

He shook his head.

Do I have to go back?

No. You’re going to live with J. and me now. We’ve got a bedroom for you. It’s across the hall from our bedroom.

But do I have to go back?

No. You’re going to live with us now.

True.

And you… send me back… you not do?

Of course not. We’re going to be your parents now. We’re going to be your family.

Me… scared.

He bit at his lip, looked uncertain.

I reached over slowly, put my arm around him.

He seemed to relax a bit as he leaned against me. After a minute he yawned and snuggled closer. I encouraged him to lie down and use my leg for a pillow. I spread my coat over him.

In a few minutes, he was fast asleep.
