Estevian settled EJ on the bed and walked quietly out of the room. He pulled the door until it was only a fraction of the way open and yawned wide. He glanced up when he heard Keith’s low chuckle. He smiled and lowered his head to the left in a curious manner as he joined Keith in the living room.

“What?” he asked.

Keith shook his head. “Nothing. I’ve just never realized that I could actually see someone’s larynx if they yawned big enough.”

Estevian snorted and rolled his eyes as he walked around the edge of the couch to sit down next to Keith. “Sorry. I’m exhausted, but I know I have to give EJ a little while to get settled before I can climb into bed with him or he’ll end up kicking me and beating me up until I finally leave it.”

Keith laughed. “He beats you up when you get in the bed with him?”

Estevian nodded and leaned his head back to rest it on the cushions of the couch. “Oh yes. He is what my auntie calls a ‘wild sleeper’. He thinks he’s a ninja or in some battle to save the world and I’m apparently the enemy.”

Keith continued laughing and Estevian felt warmth fill him at the knowledge that he’d caused such a reaction.

“Your family sounds really interesting. Tell me about them.” Keith settled into the corner of the couch, though it couldn’t have been easy for his massive frame, and Estevian shrugged.

“Nothing to tell really,” Estevian said, staring up at the white ceiling. “My mother is a teacher, my father is a pastor of one of the biggest megachurches in not only Atlanta but in the country. My auntie is the choir director on Sunday and Wednesday night during Bible Study and the rest of the time she works as a prison guard. My grandmother owns a restaurant in Atlanta that’s been there from before my mother was even born and my grandfather is a retired Marine. My father’s parents both live in Trinidad, where he’s a pastor and she is a nurse. I have an older brother who is a doctor, an older sister who is a lawyer and a younger sister who is in college studying to be a missionary.”

He took a deep breath and lowered his head to look back at Keith. “And they all turned their backs on me when I came out as bisexual. EJ they could have accepted, because people have babies out of wedlock all the time, all I would have had to do is marry his mother, though the fact that she died while having him would have spared me that and made me sympathetic to the community. But me wanting to have sex with men?” He shook his head. “That is unforgivable.”

Keith’s face showed his shock and he tilted forward slightly. “Are you serious? Didn’t Jesus teach love?”
