Chapter 7

Davan smiled as awareness came slowly to him. He’d been having such a wonderful dream. He stretched his arms over his head then reached across the bed for his lover, his mate. Davan inhaled sharply and his eyes snapped open when his hand encountered warm flesh.

“You’re here,” he whispered.

“I’m here, mi amor,” Manuel replied. A sad little smile came over his lips as he pressed Davan’s hand against his naked chest. “You’ll never wake up again without me in your bed.”

Davan moved his hand, caressing Manuel’s chest with his fingers. He was awed by the sight. It was something so small—the paleness of his fingers moving over Manuel’s darker skin. But it overwhelmed Davan to the point he could barely breathe.

“You’re here,” Davan whispered again, almost afraid he was still dreaming. He didn’t want to close his eyes or even blink in case he was dreaming and the sight went away. “You’re really here.”

Davan felt a sob building in his throat. He rolled over and quickly buried his face in Manuel’s massive chest, trying to swallow it down. Davan shuddered when he felt Manuel’s arms wrap around him. Manuel’s hand began to stroke his hair.

“I’m here, Davan, and I’m not going anywhere.”

Davan nodded. Memories from the previous night began to filter into his head. Manuel had claimed him once again, and he had claimed Manuel in return. They were mated for better or worse— unless Manuel decided to go to the elder and have their mating nullified.

Davan’s heart hammered in his chest as he pushed away from Manuel and rolled over to look at the time on the clock. He struggled for a moment when Manuel grabbed him and pulled him back.

“It’s too late for that, Davan.” Manuel’s features tightened. “Elder Burke is gone. I called him and told him we wouldn’t need his services.”

“You called him and told him we wouldn’t need him?”

“I told you I wasn’t letting you go, and I meant it.”

Davan couldn’t have explained the laughter that fell from his lips as he threw himself against Manuel if his life depended on it. All of the hurt and the worry and the pain of the last four years seemed to slide away as Manuel’s laughter joined his, the two joyous sounds filling the room.

Years of tension fell from Manuel’s face, turning him into the devastatingly handsome man Davan fell in love with. Davan reached out to touch Manuel’s cheek as he was rolled beneath the man.

“Manny,” he whispered.

Manuel’s eyes closed for a moment as he leaned into Davan’s hand. They were suspiciously wet when Manuel opened them a minute later.

“I’ve waited a long time to hear that word from your lips, Davan.”

“I’ve waited a long time to say it.”

Davan swallowed hard at the look of adoration that filled Manuel’s face. He’d seen that look once, many years ago before everything had gone to hell. He was scared to give his heart to Manuel once again in case that look went away. He didn’t think he could handle Manuel’s rejection a second time.
