Kayla’s heart thudded madly as Gage pressed the cloth to her throat, then slowly eased it behind each ear, across her nape, over her shoulders. She’d never, ever, done anything like this before, and she was both elated and terrified.Throughout her adulthood, she’d worked hard to overcome the fears that Romero had instilled in her when she was a child, but she realized with absolute clarity now just how many she hadn’t conquered.

She’d wanted to go to college, but she’d barely finished high school after what had happened. It reminded her too much of the classes she took at the Seven Sisters. Ms. Rosa taught her back then, and Romero often stood near the windows, supposedly working on the shrubbery, but in truth watching the girls he terrorized each night.

She’d wanted to have a successful job, but that was difficult when she didn’t stay in one place very long. Constantly changing her address and employment didn’t make for the ideal career situation. It simply wasn’t possible.

And the big fear due to Romero…her fear of relationships and of men in general.

She’d never let any man get too close, and certainly had never told any man about what had happened in her past. But Gage already knew. And more than that, he’d already been close to her in her dreams. She wanted him, but she couldn’t deny his accusation that she was too scared to let him really touch her. The truth was, he was right. She’d tried for nearly an hour to go to sleep next to him in the dark, but had finally given up and turned on the light. The fact that she needed it made her miserable, and made Kayla realize that she was still very much afraid.

She hated Romero for doing this to her.

She chewed her lower lip and watched Gage, mesmerized by the tender manner in which he washed her abdomen, and then lowered to his knees and lathered the cloth again. He lifted her feet, and Kayla was absolutely shocked at the pleasure that filled her when he lathered her ankles, her feet, her toes.

The spiraling intensity of desire strengthened with each teasing pass of the cloth. He started back up her legs, moving the soapy rag up one inner thigh in tiny little circles, while his fingers mimicked the technique on the other. And then he stood, placed the cloth back on the small silver rack in the wall and began to rinse her, thoroughly, completely, with his hands.

“Almost done,” he said. Kayla’s entire body felt as if it would melt, or explode, at his command. He turned her away from him and put his back to the spray, so that her body was barely misted by the heated stream. Wrapping his arms around her, he lathered his hands with soap, his long fingers curling around the bar, while Kayla watched, spellbound. Then he placed the bar back on the dish and, to Kayla’s absolute delight, moved his hands between her legs.

Gage pressed his fingertips softly against her folds, rubbing gently and massaging her thoroughly.
