She woke to the dip of the bed. When she mumbled a complaint at the loss of warmth, Javi kissed her forehead.

“It’s still early,” he said. “Sleep in a little longer. I want to make sure the storm didn’t tear up anything.”

Nothing besides the numbness that had kept her going since Felix disappeared and the mate bond shattered.

She waited until she heard the front door close then rose. She washed up and finally had a chance to really shake out the clothes she’d borrowed from the mudroom. A flowered skirt and a gypsy blouse, the sort of thing an old female wolf would have in her bins. Corrine slanted a wistful glance at the wet wad of her jeans. That’s what she got for having wild sex instead of hanging up her belongings.

Then she spotted Javi’s shredded clothes and couldn’t contain her smirk.

To make amends for her wanton destructiveness, she stripped and remade his bed as neatly as it had been before they trashed it. Then she took her wet clothes and the sheets and headed for the laundry room.

By the time he returned, carrying the chill of the morning with him and a few diamonds of water in his dark hair, she had coffee brewing in the old enamel percolator.

“My mother’s father had one of these for when we went camping,” she said. “He told me they were magic beans and I had to be special to touch them. He made up all these elaborate quests we had to complete to prove we were worthy. So of course I pinky-swore I’d get up super early every morning to make the coffee.” She shook her head. “Took me years to figure out he was scamming me.”

Javi murmured his thanks when she filled two cups. “Did he know what you were?”

“No. My mother had explained why we could never tell him. But I always had perfect control of the beast so she trusted me. Even if I was ridiculously naïve.”

He wrapped his hands around the mug. “That sounds pretty awesome.”

She tilted her head. “To be naïve?”

“To be loved.”

The diffidence in his voice made her heart ache, and she reached out to brush a raindrop from his cheek. “Yes, it was.”

He straightened abruptly. “I’m loving your new look. Sixties flower child, if I know my eras. Gimme a twirl.”

Corrine stepped back obediently and swung a circle so the skirt belled out. “There’s a vintage shop back home that’d pay top dollar for this getup.”

He quirked one eyebrow. “Twenty bucks?”

She wrinkled her nose at him. “Totally.”

He opened his mouth to reply but both their phones chirped simultaneously.

“Text from Kane,” Javi said. He glanced at her and she nodded back a confirmation that she’d received the same.

Army buddy in town. Wants details. Has specs. RVP mesa 0800.

Corrine frowned at her screen. “RVP?”

“Rendezvous point. You clearly didn’t play enough video games.”

She bit her lip. “Sounds like war.”

“Kane was in the military. And the Kingdom Guard has some sort of connections. It is war.”

They went out to their cars through the drizzle.
