WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM MY (HOT) FRIENDS

Vargo and Clarissa pulled over outside a large house. About six or seven cars were parked in the driveway and down the street. None of the cars were parked on the lawn, which was a relief because I know from watching teen movies that’s a sure sign a party has gone out of control and is about to be busted up by the cops. One of the cars was definitely Lester’s.

After I got off the scooter and let go of Vargo, it dawned on me that the situation wasn’t ideal. My plan had been to be invisible at the party, but here I was, walking up with two of the hottest ladies in school. Everyone knows that good-looking girls are the most visible people on the planet.

“Fun, eh?” said Vargo.

“I didn’t know you had your own wheels,” I said.

“We decided smart girls should have their own wheels,” said Vargo.

“Where are your boyfriends?” I asked, just in case I was going to have to deal with jealous dudes.

“They had other plans.” Vargo tucked Guido under her arm. “You know, Sherman, just because people call us Trophy Wives doesn’t mean we actually are.”

I blinked, not quite catching her meaning.

“We like to think of our men as Trophy Husbands. And tonight, you’re our Trophy Date.”

My face and a few other parts became warm, and Vargo and Clarissa laughed. They started toward the house and I tugged on Vargo’s sleeve.

“Just a second,” I said.

Vargo and Clarissa turned to me. I had this moment of wishing I was Guido and that I could hide under Vargo’s arm.

“I was wondering. Well, actually, the thing is. I, uh…”
