Chapter 11

Wednesday, October 12th

The doors of the elevator haven’t even opened and my nose could tell you exactly which way we need to head. I’m starving. The buffet is going to lose money on me today. With the tiny amount Terra will eat, it will come closer to evening out. So, the house should be happy.

Once we’re seated, we order coffee and then snake our way around the offerings. Amazingly, I’m back at the table before Terra. I didn’t realize there were that many vegetables offered.

“Oh my god, did you see the broccoli and carrot salad?” Terra asks me, sitting a large plate of the stuff down in front of me.

“And I’d be looking for that, why?” I poke at her. I have three heaping plates in front of me and none of them have a vegetable on them, except if you count the loaded baked potato… and the fries. You gotta love Vegas. It’s a 24/7 town and the buffets serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner round the clock.

We still haven’t talked about last night. I’m suspicious that she’s still really pissed at me and she’s using the vegetable bounty to hide her feelings. But honestly, I’m glad we’re pretending nothing happened. I still need more time to process the whole ordeal. As I casually sneak glances at Terra, she doesn’t look worried or upset. In fact, she looks downright cheerful. I find my leg bouncing with anxiety. She must have an angle she’s working.

“More coffee?” I ask her.

“That would be wonderful,” she says sweetly. “Can I ask a favor?”

See, I knew it. She’s got something up her sleeve.

“Those scrambled eggs look amazing. Can I steal just a forkful of them off your plate?”

I catch my eyes blinking in amazement. She’s playing me. She’s definitely playing me. She’s never asked for a bite of anything I’ve eaten. Even with the snacks we bought on the drive here, she bought a bag for me and a bag for herself. I stammer, “ah, yes.”

“Damn, those are fabulous,” she exclaims.

“I know, right?” Then I scrunch up my face, trying to look like I’m about to deliver bad news. “But I have to tell you, I like your eggs better. You know, the ones with the cream cheese in them.” I smile at her and her face lights up. I really love when her eyes have those tiny little smile lines. It’s a tell for genuine happiness.

“Did you look at the spa services?” she says, breaking eye contact.

“Oh, I forgot to tell you. We’re booked in at ten,” I talk through a mouthful of steak and egg yolk.

“Ten? Today?”

“Yeah,” I swallow. “All arranged. We just have to show up.”

“But you didn’t ask what I wanted?”

She’s got anger fire in her eyes and if looks could kill, I’d be missing at least a leg. She looks at her Apple Watch and starts to get up.

“Sit. We’ve got plenty of time.”

“I have to go back to the suite to get my stuff,” she says anxiously.

“You don’t need a thing.
