Thick heavy clouds of gray covered Edgewood as I slipped into the driver’s seat. I’d sprayed an extra dose of perfume to entice, but more to divert attention. I’d played up my cheekbones a little more than I normally did. The bronzer was heavy-handed, making me look more exotic than I really was. I’d layered on the black eyeliner, making my eyes appear feline. I wore a gleaming diamond choker around my neck. All the bells and whistles to keep Maloney occupied. White satin gloves were shoved in my handbag for the dance. I’d planned to pull out all the stops. Plum lipstick stained my lips. My bikini set matched the diamond choker, a metallic number that shimmered every time I shook. I hoped it was enough to dazzle him. It was one of my favorite outfits to dance in. Made me feel like I was a Vegas showgirl. I wore my Louboutins to accentuate the outfit. I gripped the wheel on the way with my forehead pounding.

I arrived at the club, walking in through the front as per normal. My legs were shaky as I pushed the door open. I shut my eyes briefly, knowing that Rush was here. If Carl found that out, there would be bloodshed. I was walking into a place that was a ticking time bomb. I waved at Danny, giving him a fake smile as I approached the bar.

He arched an eyebrow at me. “He’s already in there. Waiting. Seems kind of off today. Is that normal?”

I tried to shrug the lie off my shoulders. I knew why. “Danny, can I have vodka? Just a shot. I need one today.” A sprinkling of patrons. A man at the other end of the bar. A woman in the back with her man canoodling. Rock music in the background. The lights were down low. Same old, same old.

“Sure.” He poured the clear liquid in a shot glass and handed it to me. I slammed it down as the tartness of it hit the back of my tastebuds.

“All right. I’m ready.” I looked at the locked door next to the one I’d entered for the last two years. I turned the knob and strolled in.

“If it isn’t the lady herself. Hey, Penn.” Maloney stood and kissed me on the cheek. His breath reeked of something that smelled like bourbon to me. His grip was on the edge of my elbow with his fingers digging in. I noted the tumbler of brown liquid next to him as he sat back down.

“Hi, Carl. Nice to see you again.” He reached in and put a stack of money on the side table. His legs were crossed as his greedy eyes eased over my legs. I dropped my trench coat, revealing my outfit. His eyebrows raised as I practically saw the drool ready to drop from his ugly lips.

“Nice number you got on there. Real shiny. You’ve outdone yourself tonight. We don’t have much time, so let’s get started, huh?” I flicked on the remote to cue the music in the background.
