A client of mine named Gabby had great success with this meditation when she focused on an old photo of herself as a young child. She said, “When I look at this old photo of me, I’m filled with so much love and admiration for this little girl. She has been my most faithful friend and constant companion. She has dealt with so many things and survived them. She is beautiful and trusting, strong, resilient. I just love her.
“Reflecting on this image gave me not only amazing insights into my own strength and resilience, but peace with the idea that that child had done the best that she could throughout her life with all that she had encountered. How can I possibly be mad at her? How can I do anything but love and be grateful to and for her? When I think of her smiling and beaming, I’m nearly brought to tears.
“I swapped out that image with one of me this morning as I took one final glance in the mirror before heading to work. The practice of bringing the love and acceptance that I feel for little me to the current me is an absolutely joyous blessing.”
What would it be like if you saw yourself every day in the same way in which you regard the person or being you already love unconditionally and wholeheartedly? Can you imagine what that would feel like? How your life might change?
Most overeaters think their essence is bad and that’s why their behavior is bad. I used to think that about myself, too, but it’s simply not true. Your essence is not bad. Your essence is good, divine, and beautiful. Accept it. And when you do, when you accept yourself as “good,” as someone worthy of love and care, the nasty, negative talk that’s been hogging your airwaves for years will fade away. Once the self-hatred falls away, an even more astonishing thing happens: you will discover a reservoir of compassion and kindness for yourself you didn’t think you had, and you will actually want to start treating yourself better. Nurturing self-care will become a big yes in your life!
Someone Who Tried This Before You
Annie had a very active inner critic and became aware of how active it was only after we started working together. She realized that she spent the majority of her days caught up in self-criticism.
“How’s the tough-love approach working out for you?” I asked.
“Not good,” she said. “My critical voice makes me feel awful about myself.”
Annie’s critical voice was beating her down, making her weak, and, as a result, leading her directly back to food in the classic cycle of overeating: feel bad eat to feel good feel bad for overeating eat to feel better. She wanted to know how she could turn down the volume on her critical inner voice and break the cycle.
I said, “Let’s think about this inner critic of yours. What do you suppose is the positive intent of your critic?” Annie had to really think about this.
