CHAPTER FIFTY-ONE

“I was wondering if I might have a look in your husband’s wardrobe, Mrs. McAlister.” Cameron enquired. “It might help to discern his whereabouts if we know what he took with him.”

“Of course,” Lucy said, looking nervously towards her mother-in-law. “Get right on with it.”

Cameron smiled his thanks and together with Roberts they headed upstairs while Hazel helped make some tea. “Are you feeling any better?” she asked as she disappeared into the small kitchen.

“No overnight bag packed.” Roberts remarked as he pulled out a small brown leather holdall.

“A little unusual for someone who has been away for nearly a week or so now, wouldn’t you say?” Cameron observed.

“Unless.” Roberts began nervously. “Well, unless he has another family.” He blushed as if his idea was the height of stupidity.

“It’s possible.” Cameron nodded, seeing the logic. “Clothes in two different places. Doesn’t need to take anything with him. No trail.” He smiled. “Good thinking, Constable.”

“Thank you, sir.” He coloured again. Cameron really needed to work on the lad’s confidence.

“I tell you one thing that is missing though.”

Roberts turned around as Cameron opened the wardrobe with the spare articles of police uniform.

“What’s the regulation issue for uniformed officers?”

“One hat, one tie, three shirts, three trousers the pair, one jumper, one jacket, one overcoat, one boots pair.”

“You’re forgetting the socks.” Cameron smiled. “Here we have two white shirts, two pairs of black trousers, but no jumper, no hat and no standard issue boots.” He turned to face Roberts. “Where would you keep those things do you think?”

“All together?” Roberts suggested undecidedly.

“You would think so.” Cameron nodded. “No tie either.”

“Was he wearing his uniform when he disappeared?”

“Well, the hat and boots are not anywhere downstairs, with the tie and jumper absent too it’s beginning to look that way.”

“That could change things.” Roberts replied gravely.

“Doesn’t it just?” Cameron nodded.
