TWENTY-NINE

He went to her and raised her head off the floor, cradling it in one hand, and the fog quickly dissipated.

“Wow,” he said. “You all right? I think you – ”

“Oh, no.” She pushed him away with all her diminished might. “No. I didn’t faint. I don’t faint.”

“Right.” He leaned back on his heels. “What I meant was, you just got dizzy. Here.” He offered a hand, and after a second’s hesitation, she took it. A moment later, she was seated again. He slid the coffee cup toward her, and, holding it in both trembling hands, she took a sip. She swallowed noisily and finally spoke.

“Well, son of a bitch.”

“That pretty much says it.”

She made a face over the coffee. It was time for a decision, whether or not to believe him, but she realized that she had moved past it already. For better or worse, she believed this stranger’s story. It explained how he could know so much about her and why Henry would send him. Besides, she thought, look at him. He looks a little like me. He has both John Paul’s and Diana’s features, just as I do, along with the rangy, thoroughbred build of the young Diana.

Staring into her cup, she said quietly, “If you call me Sis, I’ll shoot you.”

“Don’t worry, I won’t.”

“And I’m not calling you Bro, either. Not Big Bro or Little Bro. What are you, anyway?”

“We’re twins. The fraternal kind.”

She had thought she was past surprise. She looked at him again, really studying him now, the shape of his brow, the planes of his face, the curve of his lips. There really was a resemblance, not the look of identical twins but of any siblings born of the same parents. If others looked at them side by side, she thought, I’ll bet they could tell.

“Twins,” she murmured. “How long have you known about me?”

“I’ll tell you everything you want to know,” he said, leaning forward, looking at her intently. “I’ve got answers to every question you have. But first we’ve got to make a decision.”

“I know. Diana.” A long sigh. “Look, I’ve been thinking about her for days. There is nothing I can do. I know now that when my mother – my adoptive mother, Mora – asked me to warn John Paul and Diana, she really wanted me to find them and connect with them. Once she and Ray were dead, she wanted me to know my real parents. The warning part was almost unnecessary. John Paul knew about Quentin Latta being on the rampage before I met him, and I’m sure Diana knows about him too. From what I’ve heard about her, she’s pretty good at taking care of herself.”

“Up against him, she may not be good enough.”

“Well, what am I supposed to do?” Her voice rose with the level of her exasperation. “Even assuming we could find her, which is not exactly a slam-dunk, what can I do? Or you? We’re not cops or bodyguards. You’re not a cop, are you?”

“No.
