Chapter Seven
“What the fuck.”
Devon opened the door and kicked his backpack off in the front hallway. He muttered to himself, swearing under his breath, as he wandered into the kitchen. It wasn’t even five P.M., and yet so much bullshit had happened. He’d gone from working a night shift to an early one, making his already screwed up sleep schedule close to sensory deprivation torture.
Not to mention, Jace hadn’t been at work. So there was no possible resolution to their last encounter and the arbitrary rule and relationship status Jace had decided for them. Not that I need a resolution or a relationship, Devon thought, but since I apparently can’t see Jace anywhere but at work, then it’s the only place I can actually talk to him face to face.
After drinking a Coke in three gulps and making a sandwich, Devon went in search of Terry. When he wasn’t in the basement playing video games, or in any of the upstairs rooms, Devon pulled out his phone. He sent several angry texts to Terry in hopes of finding him somewhere soon.
—Come on. You can’t give me yet another early shift and then bail on me, especially when you have the day off. I gotta talk to you. And then we need to play CS so I can shoot up some avatar’s head and feel better about myself. Come on. Have time for your stupid little brother.
Terry didn’t respond until at least three episodes of bad TV later.
—Jeez. Chill, Devon. I’m out.
—With who? Since when do you have friends?
—I date! I may have been with a woman all day. You don’t know.
—Gross.
—Shut up.
Devon pinched his temples. He fought the urge to throw his glasses across the room. This back and forth with Terry was not going to help the hollow feeling he had in his chest. Nor would playing Counter-Strike, as much as he’d have liked to believe it would. He’d still have to go to bed alone that night, and the next night, from here on out. Devon sighed. What was so bad about him? Was there something written on the back of his neck that said ’fuckboy’ and nothing else?
Not that fucking Jace was a bad thing. That had been very, very good. But Devon had thought he could have a friendship with Jace. He’d thought Jace was someone Devon could hang out with and listen to music with—he’d thought they could maybe go out to a couple dinner dates, have some fun at the movies. See one another’s places. Maybe even go on a neat road trip to a concert in that beat-up Jeep. Devon wasn’t asking for much. He hadn’t been asking for much for years. But all of a sudden, not a lot was too much, and he was just a “work friend” who was occasionally a piece of meat in the back of a room.
“What the fuck?” Devon cried out. He muted Netflix and texted Terry again.
—Come on. I just need a friend right now. Maybe someone to watch a movie with.
