But Grant just laughed. “By Hollywood standards, I’m almost portly,” he told her, wiping the sandy sleep from his eyes.

“Some standards,” she countered.

“Merry Christmas, Mama,” he said, hugging her. “I’ll just throw on some clothes.”

“Don’t take all day!” she warned. “We’ve already waited more than an hour.”

As Grant dressed, he became aware of the heat blasting through the bedroom. In winter, his parents kept the central heating at a blazing eighty-two degrees. In the old days, back when he lived here, Grant would have complained loudly and persistently to Papa that he was “sweating bullets.” Eventually Papa would acquiesce, lowering the thermostat, or if he didn’t, Grant would secretly lower it himself, usually down to seventy-five. But that was back when this was his home. Now, as a guest in his parents’ home, he would keep his mouth shut, and just sweat out those bullets.
