Chapter Thirty
I had to pee. Weâd been watching Jamie Brent from across the parking lot as he performed his bouncer duties for over an hour. Nothing noteworthy had happened other than when a woman staggered out of the bar and fell face-first into the dirt parking lot. Jamieâthe jerkface as Iâd mentally dubbed himâlaughed, not even offering a hand to help the woman up.
Since then, nada. I was beyond bored, which made it that much harder to ignore my bladder.
In the rearview mirror I eyed the weeds between the station wagonâs rear bumper and the road, wondering if they were tall and thick enough to hide me if I were to squat to pee. But for a boondocks bar on a Monday night, the bar had a steady flow of vehicles coming and going and I didnât dare chance it.
On the bright side, the weather was dry and warmâbut not too warmâwhich made sitting inside the car with the windows down bearable. Jamie mustâve agreed the weather was nice because thus far heâd stayed outside working under the glow of the barâs neon lights to check IDs.
I lifted my hand, snaking a finger under the blonde curly wig to scratch my scalp. The wig was cheap. The underside felt like burlap and was not only itchy, but it was making my scalp sweat.
I glanced at Olivia but she was still in the zone, focusing her phoneâs camera to take the hundredth photo of Jamie as he stopped a couple to check their driverâs licenses. Normally sheâd be non-stop jabbering, but tonight, since arriving, sheâd been quiet. Sheâd only spoken twice since Iâd parked. Once when she told me the boysâ potty chair was in the back seat if I wanted to use it to relieve my bladderâno thank you. And the other time was to whine in disgust when Jamie picked a booger and wiped it on his jeans.
Olivia suddenly sat up straight, flipping the black fake hair over her shoulder before pointing toward the side of the building. âIsnât that one of the waitresses we need to talk to?â
I looked in the direction she pointed. A woman was smoking a cigarette along the unlit strip beside the building. âI donât know. Itâs too dark to tell.â
âI think it is. Maybe we should go talk to her. Seize the moment.â
âWith Jamie working the front door?â
âSheâs off to the side. He wonât see.â
âBut heâll see you walk across the parking lot.â
Oliviaâs head ping-ponged between Jamie and where the waitress stood. âIâve got an idea. Text me if Jamie moves.â
Before I could stop her, Olivia popped her door open and crouched low in a squat, closing the door behind her.
When she didnât reappear in front of the car I checked the side mirror, spotting her duck-walk behind the back row of cars. I shook my head, wondering if I should go after her. Before I could decide, my phone rang.
I picked it up, reading the display. Austin. I smiled as I answered it.
