“Missing? What are you talking about?” Chris Talley’s face had paled considerably upon hearing the news.

Grady swallowed, laid his elbow on the table in front of him, and leaned forward. “Yeah, we got a frantic call from her father this morning. He can’t find Kate. You wouldn't happen to know anything about that, would you?”

Chris furrowed his eyebrows and then stood up from the chair he was sitting on, running his hand through his cropped blond hair. “I have no idea what he’s talking about. What do you mean she’s missing?”

Cassie cocked her head to the side and looked at Chris. She didn’t answer his question. “When was the last time you talked to Kate?”

Chris blinked, dropping his hands limply to his sides. “I don’t know. It’s been a couple of days, I think. When I go to these conferences they keep me busy twenty-four-seven. She knows that. I think the last time we talked, I told her we’d do something this weekend after I got a chance to regroup.”

Grady stared at Chris. From what he could tell, Chris was telling the truth. His shoulders were relaxed, his eye contact steady. There was no tightness along his jawline and no narrowness in his eyes. Grady would accept that answer, at least for the moment. “How has Kate been recently?”

Chris sat down in the chair again, folded his arms across his chest and frowned. “Fine, I guess. You know about her mom, right?”

Grady nodded. “She’s been gone for a while, correct?”

“Yeah.”

Cassie interjected. “Did Kate seem concerned about her mom at all?”

Chris looked up at the ceiling for a second as if he was trying to remember and then leveled his gaze back at the detectives. “Not really. I mean, a little, maybe. She said her mom has done this a bunch of times, but I think with how long she’s been gone it has started bothering Katie some. Why?”

Grady considered for a moment letting Chris know there had been a ransom demand for Macy, but he hesitated, stopping as he sucked in a breath to speak. He wasn’t willing to play his hand, at least not yet. If Chris was somehow involved in their abductions, the less Grady and Reynolds revealed, the better. Grady folded his hands on the table in front of him, interlacing his fingers. “You have any idea where Kate could be?”

“No,” Chris said, shaking his head. “Last time I talked to her, she was at school, getting ready for some exam or something. I think she’s in the middle of midterms or just finished them. He put his hand on his forehead. “Sorry, my brain is swimming. Between the conference and all the travel, I’m not sure I’m even thinking straight.”

“That’s all right, Chris.” Cassie said encouragingly, “You’re doing fine.”

Everything in Grady wanted to yell at Cassie. In reality, other than the fact that they’d verified Chris had been out of town, they’d gotten nothing from him. It was time to cut to the chase. “Tell me about the incident between the two of you that required a police visit over the summer.
