Chapter 15
Backing away from the door, Jay took her hand firmly in his.
âWhere to now? Heâs going to beat us to the top in the elevator and be waiting for us!â Lexie cried out as they ran up the stairs as swiftly as possible while dodging around the other people.
âThatâs easy. We just donât exit on the ground floor. At the same time, we also need to be out of the stairway before he can find us. So, we need to go up one more floor and look for another way down and then out of the building!â He explained, struggling for air. Both of them were taking huge gasping breaths, trying to fill their lungs and muscles with enough air. Practicing martial arts and running all-out were entirely different forms of exercise.
Of course, the panic that both had felt upon seeing the gun had driven the air from their lungs and sent adrenaline coursing through the veins more effectively than exercise ever could. When this was all over, if they survived, they would be shaking from the aftereffects of the adrenaline high.
They continued up the stairs as fast as they could, rounding one last landing and seeing the doors to the ground floor just above them. Taking the stairs two at a time, they reached the door and stopped. Together they carefully peered out of the small window inset in the door and out to the foyer beyond. People crowded everywhere in the lobby, but the area in front of their door was open and bare of people.
They would be in plain sight for all to see if they exited now. Pulling their heads back, they refocused on running and surged up the stairs. Their muscles screamed at them to slow down and rest.
Lexie crept into the lead as they burst through the doors on the second floor and didnât slow down. Cream-colored walls blurred by as they ran. The need to get away from the stairs and the elevator overriding all other thoughts.
The nurses and people filling the hall all yelled at them to slow down, but were ignored.
The duo finally began to slow their mad dash when they were several hallways away from the elevator. It was a bad idea to continue drawing attention to themselves in this manner. They were trying to escape and hide, which would not be possible if everyone remembered them running frantically past.
Ducking into the first room, they saw without a window on the door. They immediately sank to the floor, their trembling legs no longer able to support their weight.
A dark room with metal shelves filled the space around them. With his back to the door, Jay searched for a light switch. His outstretched arm and fingers questing all over the wall next to the door. A metal plate touched his fingertips. Stretching his arm further, he felt the tip of the switch and flipped it on, flooding the room with light.
They were in a storage room holding cleaning supplies.
