“What the hell is going on down there? Who’s shooting from the southeast?”
He shouldered his rifle and struck out on his own. It was time to get closer, he had to get there and see what was going on.
The unease he’d been feeling beneath his confidence had grown exponentially. It hadn’t been a shock to see Scott running by the vehicles, but what had been was he hadn’t even seen the man leave the lodge.
Was there another door he didn’t know about? Had he been given the wrong schematics?
He didn’t like it when his plans had a glitch. Sure, most went like clockwork but this one, this plan was his most important ever. And he had to have it go right.
Clicking his mike, he pressed on while waiting for the answering sound from Frank. The others had been bought but he trusted Frank with his life.
Anger grew once more, as he hated on the Megalodon Team for having that camaraderie with everyone and not wondering if someone had paid them more to betray a member. He had that concern, especially while he was still working on getting the perfect group together.
He’d thought these were the ones but now, with that shot from the other space, he wasn’t so sure.
The man didn’t announce his arrival, just stepped out into his path and waited.
Drawing up short, he shook his head. “I could have shot you.”
“You didn’t.”
Not the point but he let it go. “Who is over there?”
“Connor Bryan was near there but he’s not answering. Do you want me to go check on him?”
The derision in his tone so thick it nearly overpowered him. “No need, Frank. I’m more interested in how that asshole got outside without anyone seeing him. Was something missed?”
“We went over the schematics you gave. The only doors we know about have been covered, including the roof access.”
“Then we missed something.” He clicked his mike once more. “Move in, hold at two hundred fifty yards.” A swift look in Frank’s direction as he spoke.
The man was staring away from him, not that he truly knew where his focus as the man was unreadable.
Without a word, he set off once more. Occasionally shots rang out and he knew it was at the man trying his best to see if there was a vehicle that could be used.
There was. The second to last could still run, it was the largest and they could all fit in, if needed. That was the one with the distance sensor. Two miles from that spot, it would detonate, he never had to touch a thing. The proximity alarm would do all the work for him.
