Chapter 18
Presley
âThe greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.â
~ Nelson Mandela
Driving along the street away from the cricket ground, I can tell Tommy is nervous. Then when he takes a different turnoff instead of the one to my house, I look over at him. âWhere are we going?â
âI wasnât going to do this until next week. I hope I donât look like an arse from doing this when⦠Taj just left.â He grabs the steering wheel tighter in one hand and places his other hand on my thigh. âBut thereâs something I want to show you tonight.â
âYou okay? Youâre nervous,â I say as he pulls into a new subdivision, close to his house.
After a few minutes of silence between us while Tommy drives through the new streets, he pulls into the driveway of a brand-new cream rendered house. It has a picket fence - which is painted the same cream colour as the house - that lines the front yard, a wide driveway that runs up to a double garage that joins onto the house and luscious green lawns. Sitting in the middle of the lawn are two round garden beds that have a rose bush in each. There is another garden running the length of the front fence which has different coloured flowers planted in it.
âWho lives here?â I ask when Tommy shuts off the car engine and undoes his seat belt.
He gets out of the car without answering me, and walks around to my door, then helps me out. âCan you do one thing for me?â he asks seriously, and I nod. âWhen I tell you why weâre here, please donât yell or scream.â
âOkay,â I say softly before he twines our fingers together and leads me to the front door. I get totally confused when he pulls his keys out and unlocks the door.
I follow Tommy inside, and he flicks on lights as we walk through the house.
This place is stunning.
Itâs painted white throughout with pops of colour from artwork and furniture. When we walk into the kitchen, my jaw drops open.
Itâs amazing.
It has a wall oven and double cooktops. The walls are white with black marble bench tops. All the accessories are rose gold and look amazing against the white and black. On one side of the kitchen is a big breakfast bar with black top stools, then next to that is a huge eight-seater glass-top table and black chairs.
âThis kitchen is to die for. I could cook up a storm in here,â I say quietly.
âThatâs what Iâm hoping for. I donât want you to be annoyed, but this is one of mum and dadâs new investment houses, and they have agreed to rent it to us at family rates.â
My jaw hits the floor. âThis is ours?â Tommy nods. âFor us to live in?â He nods again. âAre you serious? Like really?â
âIf you want to. I know we havenât talked about moving in together, but I thought itâd be easier if we lived together.
