âUm, if you donât know where the room is, thatâs fine,â the young woman said, her voice pleasant. âIâll keep looking.â
Kassia wished she would just keep looking right on out the door and as far away from Teague as possible. Yet if she in truth was Teagueâs friend, Kassia realized she would look petty if she didnât give her directions.
âWait,â she said in a voice commanding enough to stop the woman midstride. âYes, I know where it is. I was just there. Go to the end of the hall here and make a right. Itâs two doors down on the left.â
The woman brightened. âGood! So I was close after all.â She shook her head. âThe signs here are so confusing, and with his injuries I wasnât sure where to look. I didnât know if he was in the head-trauma unit or surgery or what. Iâve already checked two different rooms, and heâd been moved from both. What a wild goose chase.â
âYou certainly are persistent.â
âApparently persistence pays off, Iâm happy to say.â Her musical laugh irritated Kassia. âI drove three hours to get here. I wasnât about to give up now.â
âOh.â Who would drive three hours to see Teague without a strong connection to him?
âSilly me. Iâve been babbling. Iâm Tabitha Boswell,â the woman explained as though she had just reached into Kassiaâs mind and read it like a book. âIâm looking for my brother, Teague.â
âOh.â Kassia paused as the information sank into her brain. âOh!â She knew relief probably showed itself in her expression. This time she felt her entire face grow warm, a sure sign she had turned a brilliant shade of red.
She studied Tabithaâs face and realized the resemblance. Teague had mentioned his sister. Tabitha was successful, the pride of their family. Why hadnât Kassia realized who she was right away?
âIâm so glad I ran into someone who could help me.â She smiled brightly. âI couldnât even find the nursesâ station on this floor. I thought Iâd be wandering the halls all day looking for him.â
âWell, youâre almost there now. Your parents are with him.â
âGood. But theyâll probably wonder why Iâm so late. I had to close the store before I could leave.â She studied Kassia. âYou said you were just there? Hey, you must be Kassia.â
Kassiaâs mouth dropped open. So Teague had thought she was important enough to mention to his sister? âUh, yes. Yes, I am.â She decided that giving Tabitha her most charming smile might not hurt.
âItâs nice to meet you.â Tabitha extended her hand. Her cologne, which smelled of jasmine and vanilla, wafted toward Kassia.
She reached out and shook Tabithaâs hand. âItâs nice to meet you, too.â
Tabithaâs gaze bored into Kassia but not in an unfriendly way. She released Kassiaâs hand. âYou know what? You are just as pretty as he said you were.â
âPretty?â Kassia placed her hand to the hollow of her throat. âReally? He said that?â
âYes, really. I hope you donât mind my telling you. But donât let him know I said it.
