CHAPTER THIRTEEN

FRANCIS

Turns out I was smart to make a last minute decision to make both busses baby ready. Not so much because I’m babysitting Nugget, but because Derek is more or less glued to my side these days, and clearly Nugget along with him. It works though. And by some miracle, our new need to be inseparable on top of having a baby on board, does little to the overall dynamic of the group. If anything, it seems to be shifting to new heights of meddling and lacking boundaries.

Everyone is Liam’s parent. There isn’t a person traveling with us who hasn’t changed a diaper or made a bottle. There also isn’t much being said about the new romantic element to our relationship. No one so much as bats an eyelash anymore when Derek decides to lay one on me, or even ten, and he decides to often. He’s got this whole thing about proper hellos and goodbyes and while I roll my eyes at his antics every chance I get, I also adore every second of his efforts. I’ve never had that before. Never been with a guy who was so set on making me feel cared about every second of every day. It’s pretty fucking incredible.

“Where are we?” Addy asks as she comes stumbling out of her bunk.

“Just outside of Boston.” I point out the window beside me and the city looming up ahead. I’m sitting in the booth, laptop out and Liam sleeping on my chest. Derek’s still passed out in my bed and I have no intention of waking him. They’re performing tonight, and Liam wasn’t much for sleeping the last twelve hours.

Addy slides into the bench across from me, frowning and clearly still half asleep. “I thought we were in Boston yesterday.”

“We were in Nova Scotia yesterday. That’s not even the same country.” I laugh as softly as humanly possible.

“Oh, right.” Slowly it begins to dawn on her. “Whoa. I had some weird freaking dreams last night.”

“I figured as much. You’re not usually so geographically challenged.” I nod toward the kitchenette across from us. “I made coffee. Big mugs are stashed in the spice cabinet. Normally I don’t just offer that info up to people, but you’re clearly having a big mug sort of morning.”

She sighs. “Every morning is a big mug morning. Why do you hold out on me, Francis? I thought we were closer than that.” She shakes her head as she gets up and proceeds to dig out a mug from my hiding place.

“Hey, secret giant mug stash is super closeness. I’ve told no one else!”

She perks up a bit. “Not even Eda?”

“Ava has her own stash on the boy’s bus. Who do you think gave me the idea?”

She giggles. “I bet she hides Nutella too.”

“Behind the canned veggies, left cupboard. That’s where I keep it here.”

“Francis, you’re a fucking genius.”

“Indeed I am. Meanwhile, come and grab my cup, would you? I need a refill and I can’t get up.”
