Widow said, “Tell me the rest. What happened with you and the others after we got back? That part, I don’t know.”

“When we got back, we told our story.”

“You mean, you lied?”

“I did. We all did. Except you, I guess. The brass listened. I don’t know what Lane told them. I asked none of you to lie.”

“That doesn’t make it right.”

“I know. It turned out all the guys lied for us.”

Widow said, “For you. Not us.”

“Whatever. The brass wanted to blame someone, but they were facing two problems. The first was that this was a black op that no one wanted to be made public. Americans didn’t want to know that we were involved in secret missions in Nowhere, Africa. We were only invested in the region because we were searching for proof of WMDs being sold throughout the region. And this guy Chang had information.”

“He’d only help if we helped him?”

“Right. We scratch his back sorta thing.”

“Okay. Continue.”

“Anyway, the Navy decided there was nothing they could publicly do to Lane. They broke us up for a bit, and I never saw Lane again.”

“But that’s not the end of the story, is it?”

“No. I had heard that the CIA wasn’t happy about what we had done. I also heard that Lane later went on another mission back into West Ganbola. Back into the jungle.”

“What happened?”

Rowley said, “He never came out. He went in on an unofficial, and probably illegal, rescue mission to get Chang back. A kind of penance for giving him up in the first place, I guess. My guys were lucky that the Navy didn’t make us a part of it because Lane and his guys never came out again. It turned out it was mostly a CIA affair.”

“What happened to Lane?”

“I have no idea, not until he took my daughter. Next thing I knew, he was calling me.”

“What did he say? Did he ask for a ransom?”

“Not exactly. He told me he got caught in-country and was sentenced to hard labor for ten years. They put him in a vile and gut-wrenching prison, a real hell on earth. The government there used him as a symbol. Gave him a trial and all, but I forget the official charges.

“The rest of us were separated, sent off to different posts, including you, I guess. All I got was a slap on the wrist.”

Widow said, “Until now. Now, you’re all dead, except you and Lane.”

“And you.”

Widow ignored that.

He asked, “How did Lane get ahold of your daughter in the first place?”

Rowley said, “The Secret Service doesn’t have protection on our families. Not usually, unless we get a credible threat to their safety. Our job, first and foremost, is to safeguard the president and the vice president, as well as their families.”

Suddenly, Rowley’s hardened face took a turn, and his eyes watered up again. He tried to speak but couldn’t. He put his hand over his face for a second.

He said, “Lane took Raggie. I guess she was meeting with friends. At some café.
