They continued down the corridors, stopping every now and then for Jax to pull out his and map and sketch more of the floorplan. He was right, Kel thought. The place was massive.
âYouâre really a pro,â she said, watching over his shoulder as he worked.
He just shrugged.
âIâm serious. Without that skill, it would take forever to make any headway in this place.â She frowned. âWhy bother making the map at all? Donât you have it all in your head?â
âYeah.â He hesitated, avoiding her eyes for an entire minute while he drew. Finally, he glanced up. âThe mapâs not for me.â
She frowned. âWho is it for?â
âYou. In case we getââ
She touched a hand to his lips. âDonât say it. That canât happen. We wonât.â
His eyes grew harder, the seriousness in his tone making her cold. âRemember what you promised.â It was more than a reminder. It was a challenge. âYou owe me, Kel.â
âWhat? Why do I owe you?â
âYou saved my life last time we were in here. You owe me the chance to do the same.â
She rolled her eyes. âThat was no bigââ
âCan I trust you?â His dark eyes blazed into her, making her want to squirm.
She blinked. âYeah.â She crossed her shoulders. âBut it wonât come to that.â
âRight. It wonât.â He held her gaze for a moment. She felt like he could see right through her. She didnât know why he kept pressing the issue. She didnât even want to think about the prospect.
After another thirty minutes or so, they found a new room. Simple metal lockers lined the walls to the right and left. Plain wooden benches sat in the center of the room. There was another door on the far wall. Jax walked over to the row of lockers on the right, opening the first one. It was empty.
âYou wanna check that side, and Iâll look over here?â
âSure.â Kel walked over to the lockers on the opposite wall and pulled several doors open. The first three were empty. The fourth contained a pile of clothing. She grabbed the garments and held them up. A blue silk blouse, a gray pencil skirt, and a matching jacket. A faint scent wafted up from the silk. She might not have noticed except that she recognized the aroma of honeysuckle and vanilla. The wonderful scent brought with it a plethora of emotions, many of which she didnât understand. Joy but also sorrow. Bliss but also pain. She frowned, trying to make sense of it all.
Underneath the clothing, she found another itemâa leather-covered journal. Her heart beat faster. She stroked the smooth surface with her fingertips, hoping to feel somethingâ¦a connection of some kind. She casually flipped through the pages, glancing briefly at the contents, handwritten in black ink. A few disjointed phrases jumped out from various pages, ââ¦ran three miles todayâ¦â ââ¦hectic at the labâ¦â ââ¦what a loserâ¦â ââ¦feeling of homeâ¦â She sucked in a gulp of air when she realized that the gently slanting script before her matched what sheâd written in the journal at the cabin.
