Sights to See, People to Meet

“Hello, hello, I’m your driver Gio and I’m from Sicily,” announced the young Italian, putting on a fake Italian accent through the P.A. system of a gaudy bright red double-decker open-top bus. “We’re gonna have a great day today, right?”

“Right!” replied the chorus of teenagers as Noah took over the microphone.

“Gio’s with us for as long as we want, so today we create our own schedule. We can take our time to explore, eat whenever and whatever we want, and take as many pictures as we want. And to help you with your selfies here’s a little present.”

To squeals of delight, Noah handed out the latest and greatest new iPhones with big screens to all the kids.

“What do you want to see, Olivia?” asked Larissa as she held the phone to her eye and experimented with taking panorama photos.

“I already have what I want. I can see you smile,” beamed Olivia.

“I think JJ and Abby want to see the Empire State Building,” teased Polina.

“Why do you say that?” pondered the Shaolin grandmaster.

“Because we were watching ‘Sleepless in Seattle’ with them. The top of the Empire was where Sam and Annie realized that they were meant to fall in love. Before that they were just strangers, wondering who the other was.

Noah glanced at JJ and Abby and chuckled at the total embarrassment of the pale-faced ‘not exactly a couple.’ “The Empire State Building will be stop number one.”

“I want to go to the Statue of Liberty,” said Lydia.

“Sure. And, after that, we can have lunch. Preferences?”

Fifteen opinions were blurted out at once. Perogies. Chinese buns. Blini. Wonton…

Noah waved his arms to bring an end to the animated discussion. “Okay, okay. I got it. How about we let Larissa choose today? She’s the youngest.”

“I just like some borscht and bread,” said the little girl.

Onions, cabbage, and beets in some soup broth. “No caviar?” teased Noah.

“What’s that?” asked Larissa. “I never heard of that.”

Noah gave himself an invisible slap on the face. Of course, Larissa wouldn’t know. Here was a child who was satisfied with beet and cabbage soup, let alone a delicacy that could easily cost a hundred dollars an ounce.

“They’re salty black fish eggs,” said Walrus authoritatively. “They’re awful. If we’re gonna eat Russian, let’s go to Brighton Beach. Ukrainian Village. Dacha. Vera’s. Kandinksy’s. Ukrainian Village, Cafe Bolshaya. Moscow Heaven…They are close to each other so we can check them out.”

“How do you know about Russian food?” Polina asked the black teenager.

“Because I am a man of the world, babe,” winked Walrus

“Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, Brighton Beach. That’s half our day and maybe we’ll go to Coney Island after that,” said Noah.

“You got it guys,” hollered Gio.
