CHAPTER NINE
KEVIN WAS THRILLED to be on a road trip with Shin, even if it was just across the river to the Meadowlands. D and Marshall were along, too, but as far as Kevin was concerned this was about being with Shin in the backseat. It was really cool to be sitting so close to Shin, but Kevin kept his impulses in check. He didn’t want the straight boys up front to be uncomfortable with whatever was happening in the back.
The Meadowlands was hosting its first ever parkour competition. Shin and D wanted to compete, but they couldn’t since they weren’t eighteen. There were demo courses, however, and those were open to sixteen and older, so they would all get to try them instead. Kevin was excited to try out his skills somewhere new, especially since Shin and D were with him. He essentially had two coaches since D was more involved in his training. Ever since the incident with Quan, he’d grown closer to D and now considered him a good friend.
What was even better was Marshall and D were totally hitting it off. It was too bad they weren’t gay as their budding bromance was in full bloom. Marshall had become a parkour fan. He was too scared to try some of the moves because of his football bulk, but he did scale the gym’s rock wall a few times and enjoyed it. D, on the other hand, started playing catch with Marshall in the park while Shin and Kevin practiced on the rocks.
The parking lot was nearly full when they arrived, but luckily they snagged a spot. It was an outdoor event, and even from where they parked, they could see some of the courses that had been laid out. Kevin could make out people jumping up and down on some of them. He started to feel nervous about trying them out in front of a crowd.
Shin grabbed his arm to keep him moving. “Come on! Let’s go!”
They walked quickly to the ticket area, Shin leading the way, excited to get inside.
“This is going to be mad cool!” Marshall said, looking at the vast array of things to try. “Can you run stuff like this yet, Kev?”
Kevin took it all in. “Some of this stuff looks insane. I’ve been doing pretty basic moves. You’ve seen most of them. But I’m willing to try something new.”
“Hey, check this out,” Shin said, once they’d gotten their tickets.
He led them to the far side of the event space where he’d discovered several short courses that hadn’t been visible from the parking lot. Some were familiar to Kevin as they were similar to what he’d done at the gym or had seen on TV. The sign over the entrance to the area read “Test Zone.”
“Cool,” Kevin said.
As they drew closer, the layout of the Test Zone became more clear. There were individual items like the salmon ladder and cliffhanger, and some mini-Ninja Warrior courses with obstacles strung together. There was no
