Chapter 21
Ray had kept out of the way since arriving back at his nephewâs place. He felt a little on the outer as elderly people often do, not that anyone tried to make that happen. Indeed, it was quite the opposite. Heâd been living on his own for a number of years since his wife died and the excitement and energy that the younger people around him were showing was slowly losing its adrenalin rush for him. Sarah and Jess were focused on the kids and Sarge, Nat and Erica on trying to unravel the mystery they were investigating. He felt like the third wheel, almost like a burden. Heâd been out and inspected the trees that heâd helped supervise the planting of, after a small tornado had cut a swathe through the rainforest. Now he was delving into the entrails of Sarahâs old sportscar that had been laid up in the shed. He liked the dark blue colour but as swish as it looked with curves in all the right places, it was still an English car and had lots of foibles. The engine was not as powerful as it could have been, but then again, it had little space under the bonnet for much more. How Sarge got into it would be something for YouTube. Perhaps that it was why it was laid up, but more than likely it was the wrong sort of car to have with two kids. A two-seater convertible was for the young and the old he thought. Still he tuned it as best he could but couldnât take a run in it. He didnât have Sargeâs bulk, only his height, but the arthritis was a big hindrance to getting behind the wheel.
Sarge found his uncle out in the big shed that housed their cars and all the accumulated âjunkâ as Sarah described Sargeâs treasured items, that had not been permitted in the house. Sarge knew that Ray may feel a bit left out of things and at a loose end, but he also acknowledged that his uncle had the street smarts, along with an outsiderâs set of eyes that were needed to take the investigation a bit further. Ray was assured by his nephew that whatever he had to say would not be summarily dismissed. The group had got little extra information from Canberra the previous night and to all of them it seemed like a one-way funnel. They were being left very much to their own devices.
âThe problem you are looking at,â said Ray, âIs way too complex, if it is taken as a whole. Donât look for links. They will show up as you take it piece by piece. Firstly, the plane was going somewhere when it was highjacked. So, you need to find another airstrip within the range of what was probably a full tank of fuel. The airstrip could be anywhere even in radar-controlled space. You donât know when it was hijacked but it was done in flight before any other arms could be delivered.
